Adding matrices and scalar multiples

$2\begin{bmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4 \end{bmatrix}$ and $2\begin{vmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4 \end{vmatrix}$ look alike. Does the $2$ do the same job in both?
