Chain rule with exponentials and logarithms

The curve $y = e^{x^2}$ is lowest at $x = 0$, so its slope there is $0$. But $\frac{d}{dx}e^{x} = e^{x}$ suggests the slope is $e^{x^2}$, which is $1$ at $x = 0$. Which is right?
