Principal values of inverse functions

$\sin\frac{\pi}{6}$, $\sin\frac{5\pi}{6}$ and $\sin\frac{13\pi}{6}$ all equal $\frac{1}{2}$. A calculator's $\sin^{-1}$ key gives just one angle for $\frac{1}{2}$. Which one, and why that one?
