पुढील उतारा वाचून त्याखालील प्रश्न क्रमांक 51 ते 55 ची उत्तरे लिहा. प्राचीन काळांत सहज ओझरती नजर फेंकली, तरी विचारांची प्रचंड चळवळ दिसून येईल. यास्काचार्यांच्या नुसत्या निरुक्तांत पाहिले तर वेदांच्या अभ्यासासाठी निरनिराळ्या दृष्टीच्या शेंकडों मंडळांचीं नांवें त्यांत आलेलीं आहेत. इतिनैरुक्तिका:, इति आख्यायिका:, इति ऐतिहासिका: अशी निरनिराळीं अभ्यासमंडळें यास्क देत आहेत. तसेंच उपनिषत्काली सर्वत्र तत्त्वज्ञानाची प्रचंड व अखंड चर्चा चाललेली दिसते. शेंकडों मतें, शेंकडों पंथ, शेंकडों सूक्ष्म छटांचें तत्त्वज्ञानी आपणांस दिसून येतात. मीमांसक ईश्वर मानीत नसत; चार्वाकपंथी परलोक वगैरे मानीत नसत. कणाद वगैरे सारी सृष्टि परमाणूपासून झाली असें म्हणत. बुद्धपंथी सारे क्षणिक आहे असें मानीत. शेंकडों मतें होतीं; परंतु कुणाचा छळ झाला नाहीं. युरोपमध्ये नवविचार देणाऱ्यांच्या होळ्या करण्यात आल्या. भारतात तसें झालें नाहीं. प्रत्येकाच्या प्रामाणिक मताला येथें मान देण्यांत येत असे. ज्ञान म्हणजे पोरकटपणा समजण्यात येत नसे. एकेक गोष्ट समजून घ्यावयास तपेंच्या तपें देत. उपनिषदांत अनेक ठिकाणी ज्ञानासाठी ब्रह्मचर्यपालन करून कशी तपश्चर्या करीत, कसे चिंतनांत गढून जात, तें आलें आहे. ज्ञान मागण्यासाठीं वाटेल त्याच्याकडे जात. ब्राह्मण क्षत्रियाकडे जाई. क्षत्रिय ब्राह्मणाकडे जाई. ब्राह्मण तुलाधारासारख्या वैश्याकडे ज्ञानासाठीं नम्रपणें जाई. ज्ञान कोठेंहि असो, ते पवित्र आहे. सूर्याचा प्रकाश कोठूनही आला तरी तो घेतला पाहिजे. झाडांचीं मुळें मिळेल तेथून ओलावा घेण्यासाठीं धडपडत असतात. त्याप्रमाणेंच ज्ञानोपासकाचीं दृष्टि हवी. देवांचा कच दैत्यांच्या गुरुकडेहि जाईल आणि दैत्यांचा गुरुहि शत्रूकडच्या शिष्याला प्रेमानें सारें ज्ञान देईल. ज्ञानाच्या प्रांतात शत्रु - मित्र नाहीं. समाजाला नवविचार देणें म्हणजे फार थोर साधनाच आहे. विचाराचा डोळा समाजाला देणें याहून धन्य तर दुसरें काय आहे ? चिंतन करून आपणांस जो विचार सुचला, त्याला पूज्य मानून तो सदैव प्रकट केला पाहिजे. त्याची वाढ केली पाहिजे, तो सर्वांसमोर निर्भयपणें मांडला पाहिजे. तो सोडतां कामा नये. ज्ञानाचें बाह्य स्वरूप कोणतेंही असेल. त्या त्या बाह्यांगाची पूजा करण्यासाठीं मनुष्य नि:स्वार्थपणें कसा धडपडतो आहे, तें पाहिलें पाहिजे. ज्ञानाचें बाह्यांग व्याकरण असेल. व्याकरणरूपी परब्रह्माची एखादा पाणिनी अहोरात्र पूजा करू पाहील. त्या पाणिनीस भगवान ही पदवी भारतीय संस्कृती देईल. शंकराचार्य पाणिनीचा उल्लेख भगवान पाणिनी असा सदैव करतात. पाणिनी ज्ञानाच्या एका स्वरूपात रमले. त्यांना दुसरे तिसरे कांहींच सुचत नव्हतें, रुचत नव्हतें. व्याकरण म्हणजे त्यांचा वेदान्त. जे कोणी येतील त्यांना ते व्याकरण शिकवीत. एके दिवशी तपोवनांत ते व्याकरण शिकवीत असता एकदम एक वाघ आला. वाघाला पाहून पाणिनी पळाले नाहींत. वाघाला पाहून व्याघ्र शब्दाची ते व्युत्पत्ती सांगू लागले ! वाघ हुंगत हुंगत येत होता. पाणिनी म्हणाले, "वास घेत घेत येणारा हा पाहा वाघ." 'व्याजिघ्रति स व्याघ्र:' पाणिनी व्युत्पत्ती सांगण्याच्या आनंदात होते. शिष्य केंव्हाच पळून गेले होते ! वाघानें पाणिनीवर झडप घालून त्यांना खाऊन टाकलें ! ज्ञानाची किती थोर उपासना ! ज्ञानाची उपासना करणारा सर्व कांहीं विसरून जातो. त्याच त्या विचारांशीं तो तन्मय होतो. त्याची जणूं समाधि लागते. समाधि म्हणजे सर्वत्र ध्येयाचाच साक्षात्कार होणें. समाधि म्हणजे ध्येयतर सृष्टीं चें विस्मरण ! समाधि म्हणजे सर्व सृष्टीचें विस्मरण नव्हे.

Directions for the question number 96 to 100 : Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow : India is a difficult country to characterize, and Indians not easy to define, especially today when they are in transition, emerging from the shadows of history into the glare of a globalizing world. The book is an attempt to try and understand who we really are, in the context of the past, and the framework of the future. The task is fraught with dangers. India is too big and too diverse to allow for convenient cover-all labels. To every generalization there is a notable exception. For every similarity there is a significant difference. I would like, therefore, to apologize in advance for anything in this book which hurts the sentiments of some, or appears to be contrary to their perception about themselves. My only consideration has been to paint as truthful a portrait as possible, but I accept that truth is not universal and could have notable exception. I must mention too that I have on occasions used the word Hindu and India interchangeably. This is not motivated by any chauvinism, but only because such a large majority of Indians are Hindus. In any case, there are traits which are decidedly Indian, and are applicable to all Indians, irrespective of their religious beliefs. India appears to be on the threshold of take-off today, but the reasons for this have to go beyond the euphoria of the current 'feel-good' wave. In analyzing a people who have been in the crucible of history for millennia, no picture can be starkly black or white. Not everything can be right and not everything wrong. The challenge is to draw a balance sheet calculated on the foundational strengths of a people, and to essay the arguments that in spite of the obvious weaknesses, the strengths would prevail. Culture, history and the structure of society play a vital role in this calculation. So does the innate resilience of a people, and their aspirations and ambitions. In our case we must also take into account our inexplicable talent to muddle through, the ability to convert weakness into strength, and of course, luck.
