Simple and Compound Interest: AFCAT Numerical Ability
Simple and Compound Interest has 530 questions in the bank, and fourteen of them come from AFCAT papers of 2015 to 2019. Those fourteen ask the classic forms: a principal found from its interest, a sum given at two dates, a sum that doubles, compound interest for three years, the gap between compound and simple interest, and interest compounded half-yearly. The chapter starts with simple interest, where every year earns the same amount, and then turns to compound interest, where each year's interest earns too. The last pages compare the two, compound more than once a year, and use the same factors to pay back a loan in instalments.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Simple Interest: the Formula, Both Ways
67 questionsSimple interest is the same amount every year, P × R × T ÷ 100; the amount is the principal plus that interest, and the same formula read backwards gives the principal, the rate or the time.
Finding the Principal or Rate from Two Facts
43 questionsWhen a sum is given at two different times, or a rate has to be found in one case and used in another, the first step is one year's interest.
Changing the Rate, Time or Sum, and Splitting a Sum
52 questionsSimple interest is proportional to the principal, the rate and the time, so a change in any of them scales the interest; a difference of two interests gives the sum, and a sum split between two rates is one equation.
When a Sum Doubles, Triples or Becomes n Times at Simple Interest
69 questionsA sum that becomes n times itself has earned n minus 1 times itself as interest, the same amount every year, so rate × time = 100 × (n minus 1).
Compound Interest Added Once a Year
81 questionsEach year's interest is added to the sum and earns in its turn, so the amount is P(1 + R/100)ⁿ; the same factor read backwards gives the principal, the rate or the time.
When a Sum Becomes n Times at Compound Interest
63 questionsAt compound interest equal stretches of time multiply the sum by equal factors, so a sum that becomes n times itself in T years becomes n² times in 2T years and n³ times in 3T years.
The Difference Between Compound and Simple Interest
75 questionsFor the same sum, rate and time, compound interest is more than simple interest by the interest earned on interest: P(R/100)² over 2 years and P(R/100)²(3 + R/100) over 3 years.
Compounding Half-Yearly, Quarterly or Monthly
47 questionsCompounded k times a year, a rate of R% becomes R ÷ k per period and n years become k × n periods; the effective yearly rate is what one year of that compounding really adds.
Paying Back a Loan in Instalments
33 questionsA loan at compound interest is cleared when its payments, each divided by its own compound factor to bring it back to today, add up to the loan; or, year by year, when the balance carried forward reaches zero.

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (5)
- Turn months into years→ Simple interest and amount
- Interest or amount→ Simple interest and amount
- Take the interest out of the amount first→ Finding the principal, rate or time
- A rate per period is not a yearly rate→ Rates per month, quarter or half-year
- Compounding words at simple interest→ Rates per month, quarter or half-year
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (3)
- Take off the right number of years→ A sum given at two different times
- 'A further' period→ A sum given at two different times
- Change the rate, not the amount→ Find the rate in one case, use it in another
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (4)
- Scale, do not add→ Interest scales with the sum, the rate and the time
- Multiply the rate difference by the time→ A difference of two interests gives the sum
- Answer the part that is asked→ One sum split between two rates
- Equal interest means the inverse ratio→ One sum split between two rates
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- n times means n minus 1 as interest→ The multiple and the rate
- Count interest, not the multiple→ From one multiple to another
- Add the 1 back→ The multiple, amount or interest after another time
Formulas (5)
Watch out for (6)
- Compound interest is not rate × years→ Amount and compound interest
- Divide by the factor→ Principal, rate or time from the factor
- A different time needs the yearly factor→ The same factor on another sum
- Divide by the earlier amount→ Two amounts in a row, and one year's interest
- A falling value multiplies by less than 1→ Changing rates, part years, growth and depreciation
- The part year is simple→ Changing rates, part years, growth and depreciation
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (4)
- Multiples multiply, they do not add→ Whole powers: multiply the time
- Scale the power, not the multiple→ Through a common base
- The rate is the factor minus 1→ The rate from a multiple
- Subtract the principal for the interest→ The multiple after another time
Formulas (5)
Watch out for (5)
- Square the rate as a fraction→ Two years: P(R/100)²
- R squared is not R→ The rate from the two-year gap
- Three years is not three times two→ Three years
- Divide by the compound share→ From one interest to the other
- Halve the simple interest first→ Both interests given: interest on interest
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (4)
- Change both the rate and the count→ Rate per period and number of periods
- The two-year shortcut is annual only→ Annual against half-yearly, and CI against SI
- Never below the quoted rate→ Effective annual rate
- Take the root, do not divide→ From an effective rate back to a period rate
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- An instalment is not loan ÷ number→ Equal instalments
- Each payment has its own factor→ The loan from its payments
- Grow before you subtract→ Carrying the balance forward
