Sequence and Series: AFCAT Numerical Ability
Sequence and Series has 94 practice questions in the AFCAT bank and no AFCAT past-year question yet; about a fifth of them are HARD. The work is the same in every progression: one formula for a term and one for a sum, read forwards to find a value or backwards to find how many terms there are. A harmonic progression brings no new formula, only a flip to an arithmetic progression and back. Most marks here are lost to counting slips, such as taking n steps to reach the nth term, and to a flip that is never undone.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Arithmetic Progression: Terms, Counting Terms and Sums
29 questionsA sequence that rises or falls by the same amount at every step: find any term, which term a number is, the progression from two of its terms, the sum of n terms, and the terms hidden in a sum formula.
Geometric Progression: Terms, Sums and the Sum to Infinity
31 questionsA sequence that is multiplied by the same number at every step: find any term, which term a number is, the progression from two of its terms, the sum of n terms and the sum to infinity.
Harmonic Progression, and the Three Means
27 questionsNumbers whose reciprocals form an AP, the harmonic mean of two numbers, the tests that say whether three numbers are in AP, GP or HP, and how the arithmetic, geometric and harmonic means compare.
Special Series and the Standard Sums
7 questionsThe sums of the first n natural, odd and even numbers, of squares and of cubes, and series that turn into these sums once their terms are split, paired or rewritten.
