Squares, Cubes and Roots: AFCAT Numerical Ability
Squares, Cubes and Roots holds 137 practice questions in the AFCAT bank, none of them from an AFCAT past paper, and nearly a quarter are HARD. Most questions are one quick step, a square, a root or a cube root, so the marks slip away in the details: a decimal point in the wrong place, a minus sign under a cube root, a surd added to one it cannot join. The pages start from squares and the prime factor test for a perfect square, and build up to roots written as fractional powers, where the laws of indices take over.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.

Squares, Their Last Digits, and Perfect Squares
15 questionsSquare a number quickly with (a + b)² and (a − b)², read the last digit of a square, and test whether a number is a perfect square by its prime factors.
Square Roots of Whole Numbers, Decimals and Fractions
26 questionsFind the square root of a large perfect square by bracketing it, take roots of decimals and fractions, follow the rules for roots in an expression, and solve equations with a root.
Cubes, Cube Roots, and Square and Cube Roots Together
39 questionsCube a number and use the cube identities, recognise a perfect cube, find cube roots of whole numbers, negatives, decimals and fractions, and evaluate square and cube roots in one expression.
The Least Number That Makes a Perfect Square or Cube
10 questionsFind the least number to multiply or divide by for a perfect square or cube, the greatest square or cube that divides a number, and the least number to add or subtract for a perfect square.
Surds: Multiplying, Simplifying and Rationalising
28 questionsMultiply and divide roots under one sign, take square and cube factors out of a root, square a two-term surd and undo it, and clear a root from a denominator.
Roots as Fractional Powers, and the Laws of Indices
19 questionsWrite a root as a fractional power and back, combine powers of one base with the laws of indices, compare roots of different kinds, and solve equations where powers are equal.
