Mole Concept and Stoichiometry — CDS Chemistry
Mole Concept and Stoichiometry has 11 past-year questions in CDS General Knowledge, from 2017 (II) to 2026 (II), and it is where CDS chemistry most often asks you to calculate. The sums are short: moles from grams, atoms from moles, an equivalent weight, a coefficient from a balanced equation. Write the units at every step and almost every error disappears; the two traps that remain are counting molecules when the question asks for atoms, and dividing by the solvent instead of the solution.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
The Mole, Equivalent Weight and Concentration
6 PYQsMoles from mass and molar mass, counting atoms with Avogadro's number, equivalent weight from the n-factor, and molarity against molality.
Balancing Equations and Reacting Amounts
5 PYQsBalancing a chemical equation by counting atoms, then reading it as a mole ratio to find how much reacts, how much forms, and which reactant runs out first.

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (8)
- Count atoms, not molecules, when asked for atoms→ Moles, molar mass and Avogadro's number
- Equal in number is not equal in mass→ Moles, molar mass and Avogadro's number
- Helium is monatomic→ Moles, molar mass and Avogadro's number
- A mole is a number, not a mass→ Moles, molar mass and Avogadro's number
- Divide by the n-factor, not by the number of atoms→ Equivalent weight
- Basicity counts only replaceable hydrogens→ Equivalent weight
- Molarity uses the solution, molality the solvent→ Molarity and molality
- Molality does not change with temperature→ Molarity and molality
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (5)
- Re-check the first element after fixing the second→ Balancing a chemical equation
- Never change a subscript→ Balancing a chemical equation
- The reactant in excess does not set the yield→ Mole ratios and the limiting reactant
- Mass is conserved, moles need not be→ Mole ratios and the limiting reactant
- Per gram means divide by mass→ Mole ratios and the limiting reactant
