Algebraic Identities — CDS Elementary Mathematics
Algebraic Identities and Simplification has 98 past-year questions in CDS Elementary Mathematics, across all twenty-one sittings from 2016 (II) to 2026 (II). More than a third of them are HARD, yet nearly all end in a small constant, so a numerical check is always available. The pages build from two variables to three: the binomial identities and the x ± 1/x ladder first, then symmetric sums, the cube identity and sums of squares, and finally the conditional, rational and cyclic expressions where the HARD questions gather.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Squares and Cubes of a Binomial
12 PYQsKnowing a + b and ab fixes every symmetric expression in a and b, and the standard factor forms turn long arithmetic into a single subtraction.
Reciprocal Sums x ± 1/x
11 PYQsOnce x + 1/x or x − 1/x is known, every higher power sum like x² + 1/x², x³ + 1/x³ or x⁴ − 1/x⁴ follows by squaring or cubing.
Sums and Products of Three Variables
11 PYQsThe square of a + b + c links the sum of squares to the sum of pairwise products, and expanding a product of brackets is read off from those same sums.
The Cube Identity and a + b + c = 0
11 PYQsa³ + b³ + c³ − 3abc factors as (a + b + c)(a² + b² + c² − ab − bc − ca), so when a + b + c = 0 the sum of the cubes is exactly 3abc.
Sums of Squares and Least Values
12 PYQsA square is never negative, so a sum of squares that equals zero forces each square to be zero, and t + 1/t is never less than 2 for positive t.
Conditional Identities
16 PYQsWhen a question gives a relation between the letters, use it to rewrite each piece of the expression until the pieces match; the answer is usually a constant.
Rational Algebraic Expressions
19 PYQsFactor every numerator and denominator, cancel common factors, combine over a common denominator, and clear denominators to solve.
Cyclic Sums and Factors
6 PYQsSums that cycle a → b → c → a have fixed values and fixed factors, and a single numerical test is the fastest way to find them.

- Check the middle coefficients→ Spotting an expanded cube
- The signs pair up opposite→ Difference of squares, sum and difference of cubes
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- x − 1/x has two signs→ Squaring up and down the ladder
- Plus 3v for the difference, minus 3u for the sum→ Cubes and higher powers
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- A square root gives two signs→ The square of a + b + c
- The signs alternate→ Expanding a product of brackets

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Read what the stem already gives→ Sums of squares that vanish
- Only for positive values→ Least values: t + 1/t is at least 2
- Greater or greater-or-equal?→ Which is larger?
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Test with numbers that fit→ Rewrite each piece with the condition
- Do not drop the zero-sum case→ Equal ratios
- Dividing by something that could be zero→ Factor first, then substitute
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Cancel factors, not terms→ Factorise and cancel

Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Watch the order of the factors→ Three cyclic fraction sums
- One test disproves; it does not prove→ Factors of cyclic expressions
