Circles — CDS Elementary Mathematics
Circles has 69 past-year questions in CDS Elementary Mathematics, across all twenty-one sittings from 2016 (II) to 2026 (II). Chords and the perpendicular from the centre alone account for 15 of them, and most questions rest on two right triangles: radius, half-chord and distance from the centre, and radius, tangent and line to the centre. The pages start with chords and angles, move to the circumcircle, tangents and power of a point, and end with two circles.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Chords and the Perpendicular from the Centre
15 PYQsThe perpendicular from the centre bisects a chord, so the radius, the half-chord and the distance from the centre make a right triangle.
Angles in a Circle
13 PYQsThe angle an arc subtends at the centre is twice the angle it subtends at any point on the rest of the circle.
The Circle Through Three Points, and Locus
9 PYQsExactly one circle passes through three points that are not on a line; a locus is the path of every point that satisfies one condition.
Tangents from an External Point
11 PYQsA tangent is perpendicular to the radius at its point of contact, and the two tangents from one outside point are equal.
Intersecting Chords and Power of a Point
5 PYQsThrough a fixed point, every line that meets the circle cuts off two segments with the same product.
Two Circles: Common Tangents and Common Chords
6 PYQsA common tangent's length comes from a right triangle on the line of centres; a common chord is bisected at right angles by that line.
Touching Circles
10 PYQsCircles that touch have their point of contact on the line of centres: the centres are r₁ + r₂ apart outside, r₁ − r₂ apart inside.

Formulas (2)
Watch out for (4)
- Parallel chords have two answers→ Half-chord, distance and radius
- Half the chord, not the chord→ Half-chord, distance and radius
- The centre is r − h from the chord→ Arches, segment heights and equal chords
- Radius or diameter?→ Arches, segment heights and equal chords
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (3)
- An obtuse inscribed angle needs the reflex angle→ Angle at the centre and angles in the same segment
- Two diameters meet at the centre→ Angle at the centre and angles in the same segment
- Segment, not sector→ Cyclic quadrilaterals and the two segments
Watch out for (2)
- Equal distance from every vertex means circumcentre→ Circumcircle of a triangle
- Sum of squares is a circle, not a line→ Locus of a moving point
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Supplement, not double→ Length of a tangent
- The ALTERNATE segment→ The alternate segment theorem
- Opposite sides, not adjacent ones→ A circle inside a quadrilateral
Watch out for (2)
- The whole secant, then subtract→ Chords, secants and the tangent from one point
- Given the product, the statements are not needed→ Chords, secants and the tangent from one point
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Difference for direct, sum for transverse→ Direct and transverse common tangents
- Both centres can be on one side→ The common chord of intersecting circles
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (3)
- Internal contact uses the difference→ Radii from contact and areas
- Diameters, not radii→ Radii from contact and areas
- Sine of the HALF-angle→ Circles inside an angle
