Simple and Compound Interest — CDS Elementary Mathematics
Simple and Compound Interest has 34 past-year questions in CDS Elementary Mathematics, in 20 of the twenty-one sittings from 2016 (II) to 2026 (II). Simple and compound interest account for 13 each, and five are HARD: nearly every one is SI = PRT/100 or A = P(1 + r)ⁿ read in the right direction. The pages go from simple interest to compound interest and end with the CI − SI gap and instalments.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Simple Interest
13 PYQsSimple interest is charged on the original sum only, so it grows by the same amount every year: SI = PRT/100.
Compound Interest
13 PYQsCompound interest adds each period's interest to the sum, so the amount is multiplied by (1 + r) every period: A = P(1 + r)ⁿ.
CI Minus SI, and Instalments
8 PYQsOver two years compound interest exceeds simple interest by the interest on the first year's interest, P(r/100)²; instalments repay a loan when their values today add up to it.

Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Adjust both the rate and the periods→ The amount formula and compounding periods
- Four times is two doublings, not four→ Doubling times and growth factors
Watch out for (2)
- The two-year formula is for two years only→ The gap between CI and SI
- Discount each payment separately→ Equal instalments
