Ratio, Proportion and Variation — CDS Elementary Mathematics
Ratio, Proportion and Variation has 76 past-year questions in CDS Elementary Mathematics, from twenty sittings between 2016 (II) and 2026 (II), and only seven of them are HARD. Direct and inverse variation is the largest single page, with 18 questions, and every computational one is the same three steps: write the equation with a constant, find it, substitute. The pages start with combining and dividing ratios and the stories built on them, then the algebra of equal ratios, variation, partnership and mixtures.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Combining and Dividing by Ratios
16 PYQsChain ratios through a common term, and divide a quantity in a ratio by finding the value of one part.
Ratios in Income, Savings and Ages
10 PYQsWrite each quantity as a multiple of an unknown, apply the change the story describes, and solve the ratio that results.
Equal Ratios and Proportion Algebra
14 PYQsSet every equal ratio to k and substitute; for an equation between two fractions, cross-multiply and factor.
Direct and Inverse Variation
18 PYQs'y varies as x' means y = kx; 'inversely' means y = k/x; find k from one pair of values and use it for another.
Partnership
5 PYQsProfit is shared in the ratio of capital × time; when capital changes during the year, add up capital × months for each period.
Mixtures and Alligation
13 PYQsAdd up each component separately when mixtures are combined; use alligation to find the ratio in which two mixtures give a target mixture.

Watch out for (2)
- Scale, do not add→ Chaining ratios
- Answer the share that was asked→ Dividing a quantity in a ratio
Watch out for (2)
- Two ratios do not decide who saves more→ Income, expenditure and savings
- Shift both ages→ Ages in a ratio
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Mixed degrees cannot be determined→ Put each ratio equal to k
- Keep both signs→ Cross-multiply and factor
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Inverse means the product is constant→ Finding the constant of variation
- Count the degree→ Which quantities vary together
Watch out for (2)
- Do not average the ratios→ Combining mixtures
- Cross the distances→ Alligation
