Statistics — CDS Elementary Mathematics
Statistics has 80 past-year questions in CDS Elementary Mathematics, from eighteen sittings between 2016 (II) and 2026 (II), and only six of them are HARD. Almost the whole chapter is about averages — the mean, median and mode — asked of raw lists, of frequency tables and of grouped classes, often three or four items on one table. The pages follow the kind of data: vocabulary and diagrams first, then frequency tables, the mean's properties, the median of a list, grouped data, and finally which average to choose.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Data, Scales and Presentation
11 PYQsData is primary or secondary, discrete or continuous, and measured on a nominal, ordinal, interval or ratio scale; grouped data is shown in classes, histograms and polygons.
Frequency Tables and Cumulative Frequency
15 PYQsA cumulative table gives class frequencies by subtraction; a discrete x–f table gives the mean by Σfx ÷ Σf, the median from the cumulative column, and the mode as the most frequent x.
Properties of the Arithmetic Mean
12 PYQsThe mean moves with every shift and scaling of the data, the deviations from it always add to zero, and a combined mean is the frequency-weighted mean of the group means.
The Median of a List
15 PYQsPut the values in order; the median is the middle one, or the mean of the middle two when there is an even number of values.
Mean, Median and Mode of Grouped Data
19 PYQsFor class-interval data the mean uses class mid-points, the median interpolates inside the class holding the N/2th value, and the mode interpolates inside the class with the largest frequency.
Choosing a Measure of Central Tendency
8 PYQsEach average suits a different job: the mean uses every value, the median resists extreme values, the mode gives the most common value, and the harmonic mean averages rates.

Reference tables (1)
Kinds of data and scales of measurement4 rows
| Scale | What it allows | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal | Naming only | Blood group, roll number |
| Ordinal | Ranking | Hotel star rating, class rank |
| Interval | Equal differences | Temperature in °C |
| Ratio | Equal differences and ratios | Height, income, marks |
Watch out for (2)
- Ranked is not measured→ Kinds of data and scales of measurement
- Inclusive and exclusive are easy to swap→ Classes, histograms and polygons
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Percent of the maximum, not marks→ Cumulative frequency tables
- Sort the x values first→ Mean, median and mode of an x–f table
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- The added constant is added n times to the total→ Shifting and scaling the data
- The zero sum needs no arithmetic→ Deviations from the mean and from other points
- Weight by the counts→ Combined and weighted means
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Sort before you pick the middle→ Finding the median
- Half the change when two values are averaged→ How the median responds to changes
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- An open last class→ Mean of grouped data and missing frequencies
- Use boundaries, not printed limits→ Median of grouped data
- Two times f₁ in the denominator→ Mode of grouped data

Which average to use5 rows
| Measure | Best for | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Mean | Balanced data, further algebra | Pulled by extreme values |
| Median | Skewed data, open-ended classes | Ignores the size of the other values |
| Mode | Most common item (sizes, categories) | May not be unique |
| Harmonic mean | Averaging rates (km/h, Rs./unit) | Only for positive values |
| Geometric mean | Growth rates, ratios | Needs positive values |
Watch out for (2)
- Positional does not mean 'the mode'→ Which average to use
- Three median, two mean→ The empirical relation
