Data Interpretation: Tables, Charts and Decisions
Data Interpretation has 39 past questions since 2011, and the ministry papers from 2023 on have asked 2 of them. Each item gives a table or a chart and asks for one number or one choice drawn from it. The arithmetic is easy; the difficulty is reading the right rows and units, applying every condition the question sets, and not reading more into the data than it shows. Both ministry items were tables: one asked for the cheapest item meeting several conditions, the other for a percentage from a frequency table.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Reading Tables, Bar Charts, Line Graphs and Pie Charts
0 PYQsBefore calculating, read the title, the units and the headings; then pick out only the rows and columns the question needs.
Averages, Percentages and Change from Data
0 PYQsFind the mean, median and mode from a frequency table, and describe changes in data with absolute differences, percentage changes and shares of a total.
Choosing, Scheduling and Judging Claims from Data
0 PYQsStrike out every option that breaks a condition before comparing what is left, follow timetables in one clock, and accept only the claims the data actually shows.

Formulas (2)
Watch out for (3)
- The most items is not the most money→ Reading a table: rows, columns, units and totals
- A cut-off axis exaggerates differences→ Bar charts, line graphs and pie charts
- On a distance-time graph, steeper means faster→ Bar charts, line graphs and pie charts
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (4)
- Divide by the number of values, not the number of columns→ Mean, median and mode from a frequency table
- The mode and median are values→ Mean, median and mode from a frequency table
- Largest rise and largest percentage rise are different questions→ Percentage change, share and contribution from data
- A falling share is not a falling amount→ Percentage change, share and contribution from data
Reference tables (1)
What the data can and cannot support5 rows
| Claim in an option | What you must check | Common reason it fails |
|---|---|---|
| X increased over the period | Values at the start and end, in the same units | Only part of the period is shown, or the rise is in a different measure |
| X is twice Y | The actual values, not the bar lengths | The chart's axis does not start at zero |
| X caused Y | A controlled comparison where only X differs | The data only shows that X and Y occur together |
| Most people chose X | X is more than half of the total | X is the largest group but under half |
| X always or never happens | Every row of the table | One row is a counter-example |
Watch out for (5)
- The cheapest row usually breaks a condition→ Combining conditions: filter first, then optimise
- Allow the waiting and task time before choosing the next service→ Timetables, schedules and time zones
- Convert to one clock before comparing times→ Timetables, schedules and time zones
- Together is not cause→ What the data can and cannot support
- Count and rate can move in opposite directions→ What the data can and cannot support
