Numerical Reasoning: Solving Everyday Number Problems
Numerical Reasoning has 63 past questions since 2011, and the ministry papers from 2023 on have asked 6 of them. Each item is a short story that hides one or two lines of school arithmetic, so the work is reading the situation into numbers, choosing the method and checking the answer against the story. The Cambridge papers set long multi-step puzzles about costs, journeys, timetables and ages, while the ministry papers ask shorter items on percentages, half-lives, probability and rearranging a relation. Most wrong answers come from a correct calculation of the wrong quantity, and the options are built from exactly those slips, so checking the answer in the story is part of the method.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Turning a Story into Arithmetic
0 PYQsName the unknown, turn each sentence into a relation, solve, and check the answer against the story; when that is slow, work backwards or test the options.
Percentages: Change, Reverse and Parts of Parts
0 PYQsTurn every percentage change into a multiplier; multiply for successive changes, divide to go back to the original, and keep percent apart from percentage points.
Ratio, Proportion, Speed and Work
0 PYQsShare in parts, scale with the unit method, decide whether two quantities grow together or one shrinks as the other grows, and add rates rather than times.
Averages, Conversions, Clocks and Calendars
0 PYQsWork with totals rather than averages, convert every quantity to one unit before calculating, and count time in minutes and days of the week in sevens.
Counting Systematically, Overlaps and Chance
0 PYQsList possibilities in a fixed order, multiply independent choices, subtract the overlap when groups share members, and find a probability as favourable cases over all cases.
Repeated Growth, Half-Life and Checking by Estimate
0 PYQsRepeated growth multiplies by the same factor each step, a half-life halves the amount each period, and a rough estimate removes most wrong options before any exact calculation.

Watch out for (4)
- Solving for the wrong quantity→ Setting up and solving an equation from a word problem
- "5 less than x" is x − 5→ Setting up and solving an equation from a word problem
- Chained multipliers multiply→ Linked relations: substituting one into another
- Undo the steps in reverse order→ Working backwards and testing the options
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (5)
- Percentage change divides by the original→ Percentage change and the multiplier
- Successive percentages do not add→ Successive changes and reverse percentages
- To find the original, divide by the multiplier→ Successive changes and reverse percentages
- Percentage points are not percent→ Percentages of a part, and percentage points
- "Of the rest" means of the remainder, not of the whole→ Percentages of a part, and percentage points
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (4)
- 2 : 5 means 2 parts out of 7→ Sharing a quantity in a given ratio
- More workers means less time→ Direct and inverse proportion, and value for money
- Average speed is not the average of the speeds→ Speed, distance and time, and average speed
- Rates add; times do not→ Work and flow rates: adding rates, not times
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (5)
- Do not average two averages of unequal groups→ Mean and weighted mean in word problems
- Area and volume factors are squared and cubed→ Unit and currency conversions
- Exchange rates work in one direction at a time→ Unit and currency conversions
- Hours are not decimals→ Time, clocks, calendars and repeating cycles
- Counting both ends→ Time, clocks, calendars and repeating cycles
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (4)
- Does order matter?→ Systematic listing and the multiplication rule
- Adding two groups counts the overlap twice→ Overlapping groups and Venn reasoning
- Without replacement, the second fraction changes→ Probability in context
- A positive test is not the same as having the condition→ Probability in context
Watch out for (3)
- Repeated percentages compound→ Repeated growth, doubling and half-life
- Two half-lives leave a quarter, not nothing→ Repeated growth, doubling and half-life
- "How many are needed" rounds up→ Estimation, bounds and checking the options
