Spatial and Sequence Reasoning: Patterns, Clocks, Cubes and Plans
Spatial and Sequence Reasoning has 28 past questions since 2011, and the ministry papers from 2023 on have asked 4 of them. Most of the Cambridge items were drawings to compare: nets, views, pieces to fit together, mirrored displays. The ministry items need no picture at all and come down to one rule applied carefully, such as a painted-cube count, a seating plan, a clock hand turning, or a number sequence. The difficulty is rarely the arithmetic: it is an off-by-one count, a left and right seen from the wrong side, or a rule that fits only the first few terms.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Number Sequences: Finding the Rule
0 PYQsA number sequence follows a rule; you find it by testing, in order, a constant difference, a constant ratio, a pattern in the differences, and a rule built from earlier terms.
Letter Sequences and Letter Codes
0 PYQsTurn each letter into its position in the alphabet, and a letter sequence or code becomes a number problem.
Clock Hands, Elapsed Time and Days of the Week
0 PYQsClock hands turn at fixed rates, and days repeat in cycles of 7, so time puzzles reduce to a rate times a time, or a remainder.
Mirror Images, Half Turns and Folded Paper
0 PYQsA mirror or a half turn changes both each symbol and the order of the symbols; folding and punching paper is the same idea applied once per fold.
Painted Cubes, Cube Nets and Views of Solids
0 PYQsA large cube cut into small cubes splits into corners, edges, faces and a hidden core; a net folds into a cube with fixed opposite faces; a stack of cubes can be read from a grid of heights.
Directions, Grid Paths, Seating Plans and Lengths
0 PYQsTrack position and facing direction step by step, count grid routes by choosing moves, fix one person at a table before placing the rest, and count gaps rather than posts.

Formulas (2)
Watch out for (3)
- The nth term is n minus 1 steps away→ Arithmetic and geometric sequences
- Check the rule on every given term→ Differences of differences, and interleaved sequences
- Use the term after the gap→ Recurrence rules: each term built from the terms before it

| Z | 26 | 1 |
Watch out for (2)
- Position from the end is 27 minus the position→ Alphabet positions and letter sequences
- Shifts wrap from Z back to A→ Letter codes: shifts and reversed alphabets
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Degrees of the hour hand are not minutes→ Clock hands: rotations, degrees and elapsed time
- The hour hand moves between the hours→ The angle between the hour hand and the minute hand
- Day 1 is the starting day→ Days of the week and times across midnight
Reference tables (1)
Letters and digits under mirrors and half turns3 rows
| Change | Order of characters | Capital letters that look the same | Seven-segment digits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mirror on a vertical line | Reversed | A H I M O T U V W X Y | 0, 1 and 8 stay; 2 and 5 swap; the others are not digits |
| Mirror on a horizontal line | Unchanged | B C D E H I K O X | 0, 1, 3 and 8 stay; 2 and 5 swap; the others are not digits |
| Half turn (180°) | Reversed | H I N O S X Z | 0, 1, 2, 5 and 8 stay; 6 and 9 swap; 3, 4 and 7 are not digits |
Watch out for (2)
- A mirror reverses the order, not only the symbols→ Letters and digits under mirrors and half turns
- A cut on the fold line makes one hole→ Folding, punching and unfolding paper
Formulas (1)
Watch out for (3)
- "At least one face" includes the corners and edges→ Painted cubes: how many small cubes have 0, 1, 2 or 3 painted faces
- Neighbours in the net are never opposite→ Nets of a cube and finding opposite faces
- A view shows the tallest stack, not the total→ Views of a stack of cubes: front, side and top
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (4)
- Right and left depend on the way you face→ Compass directions, turns and distance from the start
- Count orders of moves, not moves→ Grids: counting shortest routes and reading numbered boards
- Facing the centre flips left and right on the far side→ Seating around a table: left and right when facing the centre
- Posts are one more than gaps on a line, equal on a loop→ Lengths along a line: fence posts and overlapping pieces
