Inverse Functions and Transforming Graphs
An inverse function undoes a function and swaps its domain and range; shifts, stretches and reflections move a known graph without changing its basic shape.
Why this matters
The 2023 paper asked for the inverse of a logarithmic function together with the set of values on which that inverse is defined. Transformations have not been asked yet, but they are on the syllabus and let you sketch any of the standard graphs after a shift or stretch.
Concept 1 of 2: Inverse functions: undoing a function
Definition
The inverse of a function satisfies and .
- It exists only when is one-to-one: no two inputs give the same output (so on all real numbers has no inverse, but on it does).
- Method: write , solve for in terms of . That expression is .
- The domain of is the range of , and the other way round.
- The graph of is the reflection of the graph of in the line .
- and are inverses: and for .

Concept 2 of 2: Transformations of graphs: shifts, stretches and reflections
Definition
Starting from the graph of :
- : shift up by (down if ).
- : shift right by (left if ).
- : vertical stretch by factor .
- : horizontal stretch by factor (squeezed towards the y-axis if ).
- : reflection in the x-axis; : reflection in the y-axis.
- Shifts move asymptotes and key points with them, so they change domains and ranges.
Stretch, then shift
- vertical stretch factor (a reflection in the x-axis if negative)
- shift to the right
- shift upwards
