Dynamics, Work and Energy: Forces, Momentum and Energy
Dynamics, Work and Energy has 18 past questions since 2011, and the ministry papers from 2023 on have asked 6 of them. The ministry questions are one or two steps: a kinetic energy from a speed in km/h, what friction does to mechanical energy, an elastic collision, gravity at a height above the Earth, and the engine force on a car at steady speed and while it accelerates. The older papers added balanced beams, which need the principle of moments. The difficulty sits in finding the resultant of all the forces before using F = ma, and in remembering that momentum is conserved in every collision while kinetic energy is conserved only in elastic ones.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Mass, Weight and Newton's Three Laws
0 PYQsA body keeps its velocity unless a resultant force acts; the resultant force equals mass times acceleration; and forces always come in equal and opposite pairs acting on two different bodies.
Friction, Inclined Planes, Circular Motion and Gravitation
0 PYQsNewton's second law applied to the forces met most often: friction, the pull of gravity along a slope, the centre-seeking force on a body moving in a circle, and gravity between masses.
Momentum, Impulse and Collisions
0 PYQsMomentum is mass times velocity; a force acting for a time changes it, and in any collision with no outside force the total momentum stays the same.
Work, Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy and Springs
0 PYQsA force does work when it moves its point of action along its own direction; that work becomes kinetic energy, gravitational potential energy or energy stored in a stretched spring.
Conservation of Mechanical Energy, Power and Efficiency
0 PYQsWithout friction, kinetic plus potential energy stays constant; with friction some becomes heat; power is how fast energy is transferred.
Moments, Couples, Equilibrium and Centre of Mass
0 PYQsA force's turning effect is the force times its perpendicular distance from the pivot; a body is in equilibrium when both the forces and the turning effects cancel.

Watch out for (5)
- The kilogram is not a unit of weight→ Mass and weight are different quantities
- Motion does not need a resultant force→ Newton's first law: balanced forces mean constant velocity
- Subtract the weight for anything pushed upwards→ Newton's second law: resultant force equals mass times acceleration
- At the top of a vertical throw, the weight still acts→ Newton's second law: resultant force equals mass times acceleration
- Weight and the normal force are not a third-law pair→ Newton's third law: action and reaction pairs
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (4)
- Static friction is only as big as it needs to be→ Static and kinetic friction
- On a slope the normal reaction is less than the weight→ Forces on an inclined plane
- Uniform circular motion has a non-zero resultant force→ Centripetal force for motion in a circle
- Measure r from the centre, not from the surface→ Newton's law of universal gravitation
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (3)
- A rebound changes the momentum by more than a stop does→ Momentum and impulse
- Momentum is always conserved; kinetic energy only in elastic collisions→ Conservation of momentum in collisions and explosions

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- No movement along the force means no work→ Work done by a force
- Kinetic energy goes with the square of the speed→ Kinetic and gravitational potential energy, and the work-energy theorem
- Stored energy is half force times extension, not force times extension→ Hooke's law and elastic potential energy
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Friction lowers mechanical energy but not total energy→ Conservation of mechanical energy, and what friction does
- The kilowatt-hour is energy, not power→ Power and efficiency
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- A couple has zero resultant force but a non-zero torque→ The moment of a force, and couples
- Include the beam's own weight, at its centre→ Equilibrium and the principle of moments
- The centre of mass is nearer the heavier mass→ Centre of mass and stability
