Fluids: Pressure, Pascal and Archimedes
Fluids has 8 past questions since 2011, and the ministry papers from 2023 on have asked 2 of them. That is fewer than one a year, but each one is short: a single law and one line of arithmetic. The ministry papers asked for facts (which way a still liquid pushes on a wall, how deep a diver goes before the pressure doubles), while the older papers asked for a calculation with a unit conversion hidden in it. Learn the three laws with their units and these questions take under a minute.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Pressure, Depth and the Hydraulic Press
0 PYQsPressure is force per area; in a liquid at rest it grows with depth, and any extra pressure you add is passed on to every point.
Upthrust, Floating and Sinking
0 PYQsA fluid pushes up on anything in it with a force equal to the weight of fluid pushed aside; comparing densities tells you whether it floats.

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (4)
- Square millimetres are not a thousandth of a square metre→ Pressure as force per area, and its units
- Doubling the pressure means doubling the absolute pressure→ Pressure at a depth in a liquid (Stevin's law)
- A still liquid pushes perpendicular to the wall→ Pressure at a depth in a liquid (Stevin's law)
- A hydraulic press multiplies force, not energy→ Pascal's principle and the hydraulic press
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (3)
- The upthrust uses the liquid's density→ Archimedes' principle: the size of the upthrust
- A sunken object still feels upthrust→ Floating and sinking by comparing densities
- For a floating object, the upthrust equals the weight in every liquid→ Floating and sinking by comparing densities
