Application of Integrals — JEE Mains Mathematics
Application of Integrals has 117 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 41 of them have a numerical answer. Every one is the same task — sketch the region, find where its boundaries meet, and integrate top minus bottom — so the pages sort the questions by the boundary that makes that task hard. The early pages work with parabolas, lines and conics; the later ones add moduli, min and max, and trigonometric, exponential and log curves, and the last runs the area backwards to find a constant.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Curves and Lines: Vertical Strips
20 PYQsRegions bounded by parabolas, cubics and lines, found by integrating the top curve minus the bottom curve between the points where they meet.
Horizontal Strips and Sideways Parabolas
18 PYQsRegions whose boundaries are easier as x in terms of y, found by integrating the right curve minus the left curve along y.
Circles, Ellipses and Other Conics
22 PYQsRegions that involve a circle, an ellipse or a hyperbola, where sectors, segments and the ellipse area πab save most of the integration.
Modulus Curves
16 PYQsRegions bounded by curves with a modulus, split where the expression inside changes sign so that each piece is an ordinary line or parabola.
Max, Min and Piecewise Boundaries
11 PYQsRegions whose boundary is the smaller or larger of two curves, or a function defined in pieces, split wherever the rule changes.
Trigonometric, Exponential and Reciprocal Curves
18 PYQsAreas bounded by sine and cosine, exponential and log curves, or the curve y = k/x, where the answer carries a surd, e or a logarithm.
Unknown Parameters and Area Ratios
12 PYQsThe area is given, compared or optimised, and the question asks for a constant in a curve: find the area in terms of the constant, then solve.

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- A third bound can cut the top off→ Top minus bottom between the meeting points
- A tangent to a cubic crosses it again→ Split where the top or bottom changes
- The lower branch→ Sideways parabolas as square roots
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Limits in y, not x→ Right minus left, integrated in y
- Changing the strips changes both limits and integrand→ Two sideways curves, or a choice of strips
- dx/dy, not dy/dx→ A tangent to a sideways parabola
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Inside and outside a parabola→ A circle and a parabola
- Minor or major→ Segments: a circle cut by a line or a circle
- Standard form first→ Ellipses, hyperbolas and other closed curves
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Each side of a V against a curve→ Moduli of linear terms
- Where the line cuts the cap→ The modulus of a quadratic
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- The min can dip below the axis→ The min or max of two curves
- Split at every jump→ Piecewise rules, composites and the greatest integer
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Area is not the signed integral→ Sine and cosine
- The ln a factor→ Exponential and log curves
- State the quadrant→ Reciprocal curves and xy = k
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Keep the sign condition→ Area in terms of the constant, then solve
- Which piece comes first→ Dividing an area, and making it largest or smallest
