Definite Integration — JEE Mains Mathematics
Definite Integration has 196 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 2021 alone has 42. The pages start with evaluating an integral directly, then the symmetry properties that avoid most of the work, then integrands that change formula part-way. They end with integrals whose limits vary, reduction formulas, and limits of sums read as integrals.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Evaluating by Substitution, Parts and Partial Fractions
49 PYQsWorking out a definite integral directly: a substitution with its limits changed, integration by parts, partial fractions and inverse-tangent splits, finding the integrand before integrating, and bounding an integral that cannot be evaluated.
The a + b − x Property and Other Symmetries
27 PYQsWriting a definite integral a second way, with x replaced by a + b − x or by 1/x, and adding the two forms so that the hard part cancels.
Odd, Even and Periodic Integrands
25 PYQsIntegrals over an interval symmetric about 0, where odd parts vanish and even parts double; the 1/(1 + aᵍ⁽ˣ⁾) denominator that halves an even integrand; and integrals of periodic functions over many periods.
Greatest Integer, Modulus and Max–Min Integrands
48 PYQsIntegrands that change formula part-way: the greatest integer function, the fractional part, the modulus, and the larger or smaller of two functions. Split the interval where the formula changes and add the pieces.
Integral Equations and Leibniz's Rule
28 PYQsIntegrals whose limits depend on x, differentiated by Leibniz's rule; equations in which a definite integral is an unknown constant; and equations of the form ∫ f(λx) dλ = a f(x), solved by power functions.
Reduction Formulas and Beta Integrals
12 PYQsFamilies of integrals indexed by n, linked by a relation between neighbouring members, and the Beta integral B(m, n) with its symmetry and its sum rule.
Limits of Sums as Integrals
7 PYQsLimits of long sums rewritten as (1/n) Σ f(k/n) and evaluated as a definite integral, with the limits set by the range of k.

Formulas (4)
Watch out for (4)
- The limits change too→ Substitution: tan x, tan(x/2) and rationalising
- Work out the boundary term→ Parts, partial fractions and inverse-tangent splits
- Check the function you found→ Find the integrand first, then integrate
- Check the bound against the options→ Bounding an integral without evaluating it
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- The sum must be simpler→ The a + b − x property
- Only for positive x→ The x → 1/x substitution
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Check the whole term→ Odd parts vanish, even parts double
- The numerator must be even→ A denominator 1 + bᵍ⁽ˣ⁾ with g odd
- The right period→ Periodic integrands
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Negative numbers round down→ Greatest integer: split where the value jumps
- The partial period at the end→ Fractional part and repeating pieces
- Every root in the interval→ Modulus and the larger or smaller of two functions
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- The chain factor→ Differentiating an integral with variable limits
- x inside the integral is not a constant→ Definite integrals as unknown constants
- Confirm the guess→ Integrals of f(λx): power-function solutions
Watch out for (2)
- Keep the boundary term→ Reduction formulas by parts
- The exponents are m − 1 and n − 1→ Beta integrals
