Determinants — JEE Mains Mathematics
Determinants has 136 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 82 of them are systems of linear equations. The first five pages sort those systems by what the question asks for: infinitely many solutions, none, a full classification, or a non-trivial solution of a homogeneous system. The last three pages are about determinants themselves — scalar multiples and adjoints, row and column operations, and determinants that depend on x.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Infinitely Many Solutions: One Equation Holds the Parameters
18 PYQsSystems of three linear equations where two equations are fully known and the parameters sit in the third: infinitely many solutions means the third is a combination of the first two.
Infinitely Many Solutions: Parameters in Two Equations
18 PYQsSystems with infinitely many solutions where the unknown constants sit in different equations: set the coefficient determinant to zero, then use a Cramer determinant, or eliminate step by step.
No Solution and Inconsistent Systems
17 PYQsSystems that have no solution: the coefficient determinant is zero but the right-hand sides do not fit, and the values of a parameter for which that happens.
Classifying a System: Unique, Infinite or None
19 PYQsDeciding for every value of the parameters whether a linear system has one solution, infinitely many or none, and finding the one solution by Cramer's rule.
Homogeneous Systems and Non-trivial Solutions
10 PYQsSystems with every right-hand side zero: they always have the zero solution, and have others exactly when the coefficient determinant is zero.
Determinants of kA, adj A and Products
29 PYQsThe rules for the determinant of a scalar multiple, an adjoint, an inverse and a product, and how they chain through nested expressions.
Simplifying Determinants by Row and Column Operations
10 PYQsEvaluating a determinant without brute expansion: taking out common factors, subtracting rows to create zeros, and spotting rows that make it vanish.
Determinants as Functions of x
15 PYQsDeterminants whose entries depend on x or on an angle: simplifying them to a single function, then finding its greatest value, its roots, its derivative or a limit.
