Inverse Trigonometric Functions — JEE Mains Mathematics
Inverse Trigonometric Functions has 70 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 16 of them want a numerical answer rather than a choice of options. The first three pages build the tools for evaluating and simplifying inverse functions, always inside their principal ranges. The last two put them to work on sums of inverse tangents and on equations, where every root must be checked against those ranges.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Domain, Range and Principal Values
16 PYQsWhere each inverse function is defined, what values it can take, and how an inverse of a trigonometric value is brought back into the principal range.
Trigonometric Values of Inverse Expressions
11 PYQsFinding a sine, cosine or tangent of a sum or multiple of inverse functions by reading each angle off a right triangle and using the angle formulas.
Simplifying Inverse Functions of a Variable
14 PYQsSimplifying an inverse function of an expression in x by a trigonometric substitution, turning compositions into algebra, and using the complementary identities.
Sums of Inverse Tangents and Telescoping Series
13 PYQsAdding inverse tangents and cotangents with the addition formula, and summing series whose terms split into differences of two inverse tangents.
Equations in Inverse Trigonometric Functions
16 PYQsSolving equations in inverse functions by combining terms and taking a tangent, sine or cosine, then checking each root against the principal ranges.

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Do not multiply by a denominator of unknown sign→ Domain conditions on the argument
- Check whether each endpoint is reached→ Ranges and complementary pairs
- sin⁻¹(sin x) is not always x→ Inverse of a trigonometric value outside the principal range
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- A triangle has no signs→ Reading ratios off a right triangle
- Pick the half angle that fits the range→ Double, half and triple angles of an inverse
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- The interval for x decides the formula→ Substitute and track the interval
- Squaring brings extra roots→ Turning a composition into algebra
- The identity needs the same argument→ Complementary identities with a condition
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- When the product exceeds 1→ The addition formula for inverse tangents
- Keep the order of the difference→ Telescoping sums of inverse tangents
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Taking tangents loses the range→ Equations in inverse tangents
- Squaring adds roots→ Equations in inverse sines and cosines
- Find the domain first→ When the domain pins x down
