Mathematical Reasoning — JEE Mains Mathematics
Mathematical Reasoning has 67 past-year questions from 2021 to 2023, and 19 of them ask for the negation of a statement or a shorter statement equivalent to it. The topic was removed from the JEE Mains syllabus after 2023, so no later paper asks it. Almost every question rests on two facts: an implication is false only when a true statement implies a false one, and De Morgan's laws flip each connective under a negation.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Truth Values, Tautologies and Contradictions
22 PYQsDecide when a compound statement is true or false: find the one row that makes an implication false, and test whether a statement is always true or always false.
Unknown Connectives and Missing Statements
11 PYQsFind which connective, or which of p, q, ∼p and ∼q, makes a statement a tautology or equal to a given one.
Negation and Simplification
19 PYQsNegate an implication, a biconditional or an and/or combination, and reduce a long statement to a short equivalent one.
Implications, Converse and Statements in Words
15 PYQsRewrite an implication in an equivalent form, form its converse and contrapositive, and turn English statements, including 'only if' and 'for all', into symbols.

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- A false antecedent makes it true→ The one row where an implication is false
- Neither is a third answer→ Testing for a tautology
- Judge the claim, not only the statement→ Judging two claims, (S1) and (S2)
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- is not→ Choosing the connective
- Test every candidate→ Choosing the missing statement
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Not the converse, not the inverse→ Negating an implication
- Flip the connective too→ De Morgan's laws
- Check one row before choosing→ Simplifying to a short equivalent
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- An 'or' of implications gives an 'and' on the left→ Equivalent forms of an implication
- 'Only if' points forward→ Converse, contrapositive and statements in words
