Permutations and Combinations — JEE Mains Mathematics
Permutations and Combinations has 160 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 92 of them are numerical answer. The pages start with arrangements under restrictions and dictionary ranks, then numbers built from digits and selections of people or letters. Later pages distribute objects into boxes, count functions, matrices and subsets, and count triangles and intersection points. The last page counts with factorials, divisors and multiples.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Arrangements with Restrictions
19 PYQsArranging people, letters or objects in a row or around a table when some must stay together, some must stay apart, or some items repeat.
Dictionary Order and Ranks
14 PYQsFinding the position of a word in the dictionary list of all arrangements of its letters, or the word at a given position; and the same for numbers listed in increasing or decreasing order.
Forming Numbers from Digits
37 PYQsCounting numbers built from a given set of digits: with a range or position condition, with a divisibility condition, or with a condition on the sum or product of the digits.
Selections and Committees
25 PYQsChoosing groups when order does not matter — committees with 'at least' conditions, picks from several groups, letters chosen from a word and then arranged — and simplifying expressions in nCr and nPr.
Distributions and Integer Solutions
17 PYQsSharing objects among people or boxes: identical objects (stars and bars, integer solutions with bounds) and distinct objects (onto maps, groups, partitions).
Counting Functions, Matrices and Subsets
18 PYQsCounting mathematical objects: one-one or increasing functions under conditions, matrices whose entries satisfy a sum condition, and subsets with a property of their elements.
Points, Lines and Polygons
10 PYQsCounting triangles, quadrilaterals and intersection points formed by given points or lines, taking care of points that lie on one line and of the sides of a polygon.
Divisibility, Divisors and Factorials
20 PYQsCounting with number theory: the power of a prime in n!, divisors of a given form, how many numbers in a range are multiples of one number but not another, and pairs chosen by their remainders.

Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Not together is not the same as apart→ Together, apart and around a table
- People are distinct, floors are distinct→ Repeated items, sequences and derangements
Watch out for (2)
- Repeated letters change the block size→ The rank of a word
- Zero is allowed after the first digit→ Numbers listed in order
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Zero in the leading place→ Filling positions: ranges, leading digits and no repetition
- Count the complement when it is smaller→ Divisibility conditions
- Digits stop at 9→ Fixed digit sum or product
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Do not choose 'at least one' first→ Committees and 'at least' conditions
- Distinct letters, not letter count→ Choosing letters from a word
- Check which root is valid→ Working with the nCr and nPr formulas
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Distinct values are a separate count→ Identical objects: stars and bars
- Labelled or unlabelled→ Distinct objects: onto maps and groups
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Constrained inputs first→ Counting functions
- Signs multiply only non-zero entries→ Counting matrices by their entries
- The empty set→ Subsets with a property
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Vertices are not among the points→ Collinear points, parallel and concurrent lines
- Indices on a circle→ Triangles and diagonals in a polygon
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- The scarcer prime decides→ Powers of a prime in n!, and counting divisors
- Use the lcm, not the product→ Counting multiples in a range
- Ordered or unordered→ Pairing numbers by their remainders
