Probability — JEE Mains Mathematics
Probability has 149 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 26 of them use total probability or Bayes' theorem. The pages start with probability by counting — selections, dice, digits — and with probabilities that depend on random coefficients. The middle pages cover the addition rule, conditional probability, independence and Bayes' theorem. The last two pages are distributions: the binomial, and the mean and variance of a random variable.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Counting Favourable Outcomes
28 PYQsClassical probability as a ratio of counts — favourable outcomes over equally likely outcomes — where the counting uses combinations for selections and arrangements for ordered results.
Dice, Digits and Divisibility
16 PYQsProbabilities for dice, coins and coloured draws with unequal chances, and for numbers chosen at random with a condition on their digits or divisibility.
Random Coefficients and Inequalities
11 PYQsProbabilities where the random outcomes are the coefficients of an equation or the terms of an inequality: count the choices that satisfy the condition.
Addition, Conditional Probability and Independence
25 PYQsThe rules that combine probabilities: the addition rule for unions, the conditional-probability formula, independence as a product, and repeated independent trials until a success.
Total Probability and Bayes' Theorem
26 PYQsSplitting an event over the ways it can happen (total probability), and reversing a conditional to find which way it most likely happened (Bayes' theorem), including cases where the contents of a bag are unknown.
Binomial Distribution
20 PYQsThe number of successes in n independent trials with the same success probability: P(X = r) = C(n, r) p^r q^(n − r), with mean np and variance npq.
Random Variables: Mean and Variance
23 PYQsWorking with a probability distribution given as a table or a formula: finding an unknown constant, probabilities of ranges, the mean E(X) and the variance E(X²) − (E X)², including the number of special items in a sample drawn without replacement.
