Quadratic Equations — JEE Mains Mathematics
Quadratic Equations has 119 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 38 of them ask for a numerical answer. The first four pages work mostly from the coefficients, with the sum, the product and the discriminant standing in for the roots themselves. The last two solve equations that become quadratic only after a modulus is split or a substitution is made.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Roots and Coefficients
16 PYQsReading the sum and product of the roots straight from the coefficients, and turning any condition on the roots into equations in those two numbers.
Symmetric Functions and Power Sums
22 PYQsWriting any symmetric expression in the roots — sums of squares, fourth powers, reciprocals — in terms of the sum and product, and cutting high powers down with a recurrence.
Common Roots and New Equations
13 PYQsTwo equations that share a root, and new equations whose roots are built from the roots of an old one.
Discriminant and Location of Roots
18 PYQsWhat the discriminant says about the roots — real, equal, rational or absent — and how the sign of the quadratic at chosen points places the roots on the number line.
Equations with Modulus and Greatest Integer
24 PYQsEquations with |x| or [x] in them: split the line where each part changes form, solve an ordinary quadratic on each piece, and keep only the roots that lie in their piece.
Equations Reducible to Quadratics
26 PYQsExponential, logarithmic and other equations that turn into a quadratic after one substitution, where the range of the substitution decides which roots survive.
