Sequences and Series — JEE Mains Mathematics
Sequences and Series has 221 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, between 29 and 47 in every year. The pages start with arithmetic and geometric progressions, then the conditions and means that join them, then infinite geometric series. The second half is about adding up series that are not progressions: standard sums, telescoping, and arithmetico-geometric and exponential series.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Arithmetic Progressions: Terms and Sums
44 PYQsAn arithmetic progression adds the same common difference d at every step: find a term from two others, a sum from two others, and use symmetric terms and odd–even parts to shorten the algebra.
Common Terms and Sub-Progressions
11 PYQsTerms shared by two progressions, and terms of one progression picked out by a divisibility condition, form a new progression: find its first term and step, then count and add.
Geometric Progressions: Terms and Sums
36 PYQsA geometric progression multiplies by the same ratio r at every step: find terms and sums from two conditions, use products and odd–even parts, and spot a GP hidden in a function, a recurrence or a two-base sum.
AP and GP Conditions, Means and AM–GM
25 PYQsTurning 'in AP', 'in GP' and 'in HP' into equations, the arithmetic, geometric and harmonic means of two numbers, and the AM–GM inequality for maxima and minima.
Infinite Geometric Series
18 PYQsThe sum to infinity of a GP with ratio between −1 and 1, the series of its squares or alternate terms, and infinite GPs hidden inside exponents, logarithms, double sums and repeated figures.
Sums by Standard Formulas
34 PYQsAdding series whose kth term is a polynomial in k: the formulas for Σk, Σk² and Σk³, finding the kth term from differences, and alternating, grouped and greatest-integer sums.
Telescoping Sums
30 PYQsSums where each term splits as a difference f(k) − f(k + 1), so almost everything cancels: partial fractions over an AP, quartic denominators, surds, and factorial terms.
Arithmetico-Geometric and Exponential Series
23 PYQsSeries whose terms are a polynomial times a power, summed by multiplying by the ratio and subtracting, and series with factorials or k in the denominator, summed through e and the logarithm series.

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Count steps, not terms→ The nth term and the common difference
- A constant term in S_n→ Sum of n terms, and an AP given by its sum
- Odd-placed, not odd-valued→ Symmetric terms, equal pairs and odd–even parts
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Start at the first COMMON term→ Common terms of two progressions
- Add the overlap back→ Terms picked out by a divisibility condition
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Increasing and positive means r > 1→ Terms and sums of a GP from two conditions
- An odd number of terms→ Products, means and odd–even parts of a GP
- f(x + y) = 2f(x)f(y) is not f(1)^n→ Recognising a GP in a function, a recurrence or a two-base sum
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- A zero term is not a GP→ Turning 'in AP', 'in GP' and 'in HP' into equations
- The larger root is the AM→ AM, GM and HM of two numbers, and means inserted between them
- Check the equality case→ Least and greatest values by AM–GM
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Check |r| < 1→ Sum to infinity, and the series of squares
- The ratio must stay below 1→ Infinite GPs inside exponents, logarithms and figures
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Sum first, then put in the limit→ Σk, Σk² and Σk³ applied to a polynomial kth term
- Check the fourth term→ Finding the kth term from differences or from the sum
- An odd count leaves one term unpaired→ Alternating, grouped and greatest-integer sums
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- A gap of two leaves two terms at each end→ Partial fractions that cancel in pairs
- Keep the ½→ Quartic denominators and surds
- The leftover at the lower limit→ Factorials, powers and functions that telescope
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- The finite case has a last term→ Multiply by the ratio and subtract
- One subtraction is not enough→ Numerators whose differences are in AP
- Watch where the sum starts→ Series summed through e and the logarithm series
