Straight Lines — JEE Mains Mathematics
Straight Lines has 112 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 45 of them build a triangle or a quadrilateral from lines and ask for a centre, an area or a vertex. The first four pages build the tools for a single line and for a pair of lines. The last three use them on triangles and quadrilaterals, and on lines and points that move under a condition.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Slope, Angle and Forms of a Line
21 PYQsThe slope of a line, the angle between two lines, the intercept and normal forms of a line, and the parametric form for measuring distance along a line.
Distance from a Line and Parallel Lines
13 PYQsThe perpendicular distance from a point to a line, the distance between parallel lines, and the sign of ax + by + c that tells which side of a line a point is on.
Image of a Point and Reflected Rays
13 PYQsThe image of a point in a line, found from the foot of the perpendicular, and its use for reflected rays of light and for shortest paths that touch a line.
Angle Bisectors and Pairs of Lines
10 PYQsThe bisectors of the angles between two lines, the angle bisector theorem in a triangle, and a pair of lines through one point written as a single second-degree equation.
Centres of a Triangle
26 PYQsThe orthocentre, circumcentre, centroid and incentre of a triangle given by its vertices or by its sides, and the Euler line that joins three of them.
Area of Triangles and Quadrilaterals
19 PYQsThe area of a triangle from its vertices, collinearity, ratios of areas inside a triangle, and parallelograms, rhombi, squares and isosceles triangles built from given lines and points.
Family of Lines and Locus
10 PYQsFamilies of lines through a fixed point, three lines that meet at one point, and the locus of a point that moves under a condition, found by eliminating the parameter.

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Two lines, not one→ The angle between two lines
- Normal form needs a unit normal→ Intercept and normal forms
- Two directions give two answers→ Distance along a line
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Write the line as ax + by + c = 0 first→ Distance from a point to a line
- Match the coefficients first→ Parallel lines
- Test with the vertex, not the sketch→ Which side of a line
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Twice, not once→ Image of a point in a line
- Reflect the right point→ Reflected rays and shortest paths
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Origin angle is not always the acute one→ Angle bisectors
- h is half the xy coefficient→ A pair of lines in one equation
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Check for a right angle first→ The orthocentre
- Midpoint alone is not enough→ The circumcentre
- Weight by the opposite side→ Centroid, incentre and dividing a side
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Two signs from one modulus→ Area from coordinates
- Which vertices are opposite→ Parallelograms, rhombi and isosceles triangles
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Count every way to fail→ Lines through a fixed point
- Keep the restrictions→ Locus of a moving point
