Three Dimensional Geometry — JEE Mains Mathematics
Three Dimensional Geometry has 268 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, the second-largest JEE Mains Maths chapter after Conic Sections. The pages build up in the usual order: lines first, then planes, then a line and a plane together. Three tools carry nearly every question: the general point of a line written with a parameter, the dot product for perpendicular directions, and the cross product for a direction perpendicular to two others.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Direction Cosines and Equations of Lines
27 PYQsDescribing a direction in space by its direction cosines or direction ratios, the angle between two lines, and writing a line through a point, through two points, or perpendicular to two given lines.
Foot, Image and Distance from a Line
57 PYQsDropping a perpendicular from a point to a line in space: where it lands (the foot), the mirror image of the point in the line, how far the point is from the line, and triangles that have one side on the line.
Shortest Distance, Intersection and Coplanar Lines
69 PYQsTwo lines in space: the shortest distance between skew or parallel lines, the common perpendicular, where two lines meet and when they are coplanar, and a third line drawn to meet both.
Equation of a Plane
52 PYQsWriting a plane from a point and a normal, three points or its intercepts; finding the normal as a cross product when the plane contains lines or is perpendicular to other planes; the family of planes through a line of intersection; and the angle between planes.
Distance, Foot and Image in a Plane
27 PYQsMeasuring from a point to a plane: the perpendicular distance, the distance between parallel planes and which side a point lies on, the foot and the mirror image of a point, and projections onto a plane.
Lines Meeting Planes
36 PYQsA line and a plane together: where the line meets the plane and in what ratio a plane cuts a segment, the angle between them, when a line is parallel to or lies in a plane, and distances measured along a given direction.

Watch out for (4)
- Intercepts are not the normal→ A plane from a point and a normal, three points, or its intercepts
- Perpendicular to a plane means CONTAINING its normal→ The normal as a cross product: planes containing lines or perpendicular to planes
- Parallel to a line: dot with its DIRECTION→ The family of planes through a line of intersection
- Take the absolute value for the acute angle→ The angle between two planes; parallel and perpendicular planes
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Match the normals before subtracting constants→ Distance from a plane, parallel planes and sides of a plane
- Keep the sign of the plane's value→ The foot and the image of a point in a plane
- Subtract the normal component, not the whole vector→ Projections onto a plane
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- means no meeting point→ Where a line meets a plane, and the ratio a plane cuts
- SINE for a line and a plane→ The angle between a line and a plane; parallel and lying in
- Multiply by at the end→ Distance measured parallel to a given line
