Trigonometric Identities — JEE Mains Mathematics
Trigonometric Identities has 57 past-year questions from 2012 to 2026, and 14 of them are from the 2026 papers. The first pages build the formulas every question here relies on: sums of two angles, double and triple angles, and the exact values at 15°, 18° and 36°. The later pages use them to collapse powers, long products and sums to a single number, and to find the largest and smallest value an expression can take.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Compound Angle Formulae
14 PYQsThe sine, cosine and tangent of a sum or difference of two angles, with the sign of each ratio fixed by its quadrant.
Standard Values and Multiple Angles
10 PYQsExact values at 15°, 18° and 36°, and the double- and triple-angle formulas that turn one ratio into another.
Powers of Sine and Cosine
10 PYQsFourth, sixth and higher powers of sine and cosine, reduced to the single quantity sin²θ cos²θ or pinned down by a given condition.
Sum-Product Formulas and Telescoping
14 PYQsProducts of sines and cosines that collapse to one value, and sums that turn into products or telescope.
Maximum, Minimum and Range
9 PYQsThe greatest and least values of a trigonometric expression, found from a sin θ + b cos θ or from a quantity with a known range.

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- The triangle gives the size, not the sign→ Signs by quadrant
- The sign in cos(A ± B) flips→ Sine and cosine of a sum
- One tangent, two angles→ Tangent of a sum
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- sin 18° and cos 36° differ in one sign→ Exact values at 15°, 18° and 36°
- sin 3θ and cos 3θ have opposite sign patterns→ Double and triple angles
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- p runs from 0 to 1/4→ Reducing through sin²θ cos²θ
- sin²θ takes the other coefficient→ A condition that fixes sin²θ
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Check where the last angle lands→ Cosine products with doubling angles
- The angles must fit the pattern→ The 60° product identities
- Multiply by the right sine→ Sum-to-product and telescoping
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- The bound needs one angle→ The bound on a sin θ + b cos θ
- Check that each end is reached→ Ranges through a bounded quantity
