Vector Algebra — JEE Mains Mathematics
Vector Algebra has 182 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 2023 alone has 44. The pages build from the dot product to the cross product, then to equations in an unknown vector and the triple products. The last page uses vectors for points, triangle centres and rotation. Most questions give vectors in components and ask for one number, so the work is careful arithmetic with the right identity.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Dot Product: Angles and Projections
27 PYQsThe dot product in components: the angle between two vectors, perpendicular, acute and obtuse conditions, projections and components along and across a vector, and a vector in the plane of two others.
Magnitudes and Unit-Vector Identities
24 PYQsWorking with vectors known only by their lengths and the angles between them: expanding the square of a sum, and handling combinations of unit vectors that include their cross product.
Cross Product: Areas and Perpendicular Vectors
37 PYQsThe cross product as area — of triangles, parallelograms and quadrilaterals — and as the direction perpendicular to two vectors, together with the identity that links it to the dot product.
Solving Vector Equations
41 PYQsFinding an unknown vector from cross-product and dot-product conditions: r × a = b × a type equations, and a × c = b with a · c given.
Triple Products and Coplanarity
29 PYQsThe scalar triple product as a determinant, a volume and a test for coplanarity, and the vector triple product a × (b × c) expanded into dot products.
Vectors in Geometry and Rotation
24 PYQsVectors applied to points and figures: dividing a segment, collinear points, the centroid, orthocentre and circumcentre, angle bisectors, and rotating a vector or the axes.

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- A negative dot product includes π→ Angle between two vectors; perpendicular, acute and obtuse
- |b| for the length, |b|² for the vector→ Projections and components along and across a vector
- The direction is not the vector→ A vector in the plane of two others
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Square before you add→ Expanding the square of a sum
- Only for unit vectors→ Combinations with a cross-product term
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Diagonals give half→ Areas of triangles, parallelograms and quadrilaterals
- Two unit vectors, not one→ A vector perpendicular to two others
- The identity is in squares→ |a × b|² + (a · b)² = |a|²|b|²
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- c × b is minus b × c→ r × a = b × a: the difference is parallel to a
- Check solvability first→ a × c = b with a · c given: cross again with a
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Points need edges, not positions→ Scalar triple product: volume and coplanarity
- Not associative→ Vector triple product: a × (b × c)
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Cross the weights→ Section points, centroid and collinearity
- Add unit vectors→ Triangle centres and angle bisectors
- Which way it turns→ Rotating a vector, and rotating the axes
