Alkynes — MHT-CET Chemistry
Alkynes is one of the smallest chapters in MHT-CET Chemistry, eleven past-year questions, but nine of them are MODERATE. They test four things: where the halogen sits in a haloalkyne, how a triple bond is made and extended, which catalyst stops at the cis-alkene, and the cyanide route that adds a carbon. Every PYQ is tagged.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Alkynes: Haloalkynes and Hybridisation
3 PYQsAn alkyne has a C≡C triple bond whose two carbons are sp hybridised; a haloalkyne has its halogen on one of those triple-bond carbons.
Making Alkynes, Partial Hydrogenation, and Adding a Carbon
7 PYQsAn alkyne is made by removing two HX from a dihalide, lengthened by alkylating its acetylide, and reduced to a cis-alkene over Lindlar's catalyst; a cyanide adds one carbon to an alkyl halide in the same spirit.
