Electromagnetic Induction — MHT-CET Physics
Electromagnetic Induction has 119 past-year questions in the MHT-CET bank, and only 11 of them are HARD. It starts from one idea — a changing magnetic flux drives an e.m.f., in the direction that opposes the change — and applies it to a rod moving through a field, a coil whose own current is changing, and a pair of coils that share flux. Self-inductance is the biggest page: how L depends on turns, length and area, the energy an inductor stores, and inductors in series and parallel. Every PYQ is tagged.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Faraday's Law, Lenz's Law and Induced Charge
22 PYQsMagnetic flux is B·A; whenever the flux through a circuit changes, an e.m.f. equal to the rate of change of flux linkage is induced (Faraday), in the direction that opposes the change (Lenz), and the charge that flows depends only on the total change in flux and the resistance, not on how fast it happened.
Motional e.m.f., Magnetic Braking and Rotating Rods
19 PYQsA straight conductor of length l moving at speed v across a field B has an e.m.f. Blv between its ends; if it closes a circuit, the current it drives feels a force that opposes the motion, and a rod or disc spinning about one end sweeps out area and develops ½Bωl².
Self-Inductance, the Energy an Inductor Stores, and Inductors Together
43 PYQsA coil's own current links flux through it, Nφ = LI; the constant L is its self-inductance, it opposes any change in that current with an e.m.f. L dI/dt, it is set by the coil's geometry (for a solenoid μ₀N²A/l), and it stores energy ½LI² in its magnetic field.
Mutual Inductance, Coupling, Transformers and Generators
35 PYQsWhen the current in one coil changes, the flux it sends through a neighbouring coil changes and induces an e.m.f. there; the constant M linking the two (Nφ₂ = MI₁, e₂ = M dI₁/dt) is their mutual inductance, it is at most √(L₁L₂), and the transformer and the a.c. generator are both built on it.

Lenz's Law: the Induced Current Opposes the Change5 rows
| Situation | Induced effect |
|---|---|
| Magnet dropped through a closed ring or pipe | falls with acceleration less than g |
| Magnet dropped through a cut ring | falls with g — no current An e.m.f. is still induced across the cut. |
| Coil and magnet moving together | no e.m.f. |
| Flux into a loop increasing | current makes a field out of it |
| Flux into a loop decreasing | current makes a field into it |
