Structure of Atoms and Nuclei — MHT-CET Physics
Structure of Atoms and Nuclei has 85 past-year questions in the MHT-CET bank, about one in five HARD. Almost all of them are ratios. Bohr's model says how the radius, speed and energy of an orbit scale with n, and the Rydberg formula turns two energy levels into a spectral line, so most questions are answered by writing two cases and dividing. The nuclear half is shorter: the decay law, counting alpha and beta particles, and the binding energy. Every PYQ is tagged.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Bohr's Model: How Each Orbit Scales With n
39 PYQsIn Bohr's model the electron's angular momentum is a whole number of h/2π, which fixes each orbit: the radius grows as n², the speed falls as 1/n, and the energy is −13.6 Z²/n² eV, so every other orbital quantity is a power of n.
The Hydrogen Spectrum and its Series
28 PYQsEvery line of the hydrogen spectrum is a jump down to a fixed lower level, with 1/λ = RZ²(1/n_f² − 1/n_i²); the lower level names the series — Lyman, Balmer, Paschen, Brackett — and within a series the first line is the longest wavelength and the series limit the shortest.
Nuclei: Radioactive Decay and Binding Energy
18 PYQsA radioactive sample loses a fixed fraction of its nuclei per unit time, N = N₀e^(−λt), so it halves every T½ = ln 2/λ; each alpha decay removes 4 from the mass number and 2 from the atomic number, each beta-minus adds 1 to the atomic number, and a nucleus's binding energy is its mass defect times c².
