Circles: SPI Mathematics
Circles has 36 questions in the SPI bank, and two of them are from the 2022 paper. Twenty are EASY and only two are HARD, and tangents carry most of the chapter. Nearly every question is one right triangle: the radius meets a tangent at 90 degrees, and the perpendicular from the centre meets a chord at 90 degrees, so Pythagoras does the work. The harder questions are angles read off a figure, where the skill is picking the right theorem.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Tangent and Radius
14 questionsA tangent touches a circle at one point, and the radius drawn to that point meets the tangent at a right angle.
Tangents from an External Point
12 questionsThe two tangents from a point outside a circle are equal, and the angle between them and the angle between the radii add to 180 degrees.
Chords, Angles and Cyclic Quadrilaterals
10 questionsThe perpendicular from the centre cuts a chord in half, the angle at the centre is twice the angle at the circle, and opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral add to 180 degrees.

What a tangent is and how many there are7 rows
| Situation | Fact |
|---|---|
| A line touching the circle at one point | A tangent |
| A line cutting the circle at two points | A secant |
| Tangents from a point inside the circle | None |
| Tangents from a point on the circle | Exactly one |
| Tangents from a point outside the circle | Exactly two |
| Tangents at the two ends of a diameter | Parallel to each other |
| Distance between two parallel tangents | The diameter, 2r It is the diameter, not the radius: a circle of radius 4 cm has parallel tangents 8 cm apart. |
Watch out for (6)
- Giving the radius as the gap between parallel tangents→ What a tangent is and how many there are
- Two tangents from a point on the circle→ What a tangent is and how many there are
- Adding the squares when one is the hypotenuse→ Length of a tangent from a right triangle
- Subtracting the lengths instead of their squares→ Length of a tangent from a right triangle
- Putting the right angle at the wrong corner→ Angles in the radius and tangent triangle
- Using sin where cos is needed→ Angles in the radius and tangent triangle

Watch out for (6)
- Matching the wrong pair of pieces→ Two tangents from one point are equal
- Thinking only the first point gives equal tangents→ Two tangents from one point are equal
- Taking 90 minus the angle instead of 180 minus it→ The angle between two tangents and the angle at the centre
- Forgetting the two right angles→ The angle between two tangents and the angle at the centre
- Dividing the area by the whole perimeter→ The circle inside a triangle
- Halving the hypotenuse→ The circle inside a triangle
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (6)
- Stopping at the half chord→ The perpendicular from the centre bisects a chord
- Putting the whole chord in the right triangle→ The perpendicular from the centre bisects a chord
- Halving when you should double→ Angles made by an arc
- Using an angle from the other side of the chord→ Angles made by an arc
- Adding neighbouring angles to 180→ Opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral
- Matching the exterior angle with the angle next to it→ Opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral
