Mensuration 3D: SPI Mathematics
Mensuration 3D has 52 questions in the SPI bank, and five of them are from the 2022 paper. Twenty-one are EASY, twenty-eight MODERATE and only three HARD: almost every one is a single formula for volume or surface, used once or twice. The marks are lost on the details around the formula, so these pages keep pointing at them: radius against diameter, which faces are counted, slant height against height, and units such as litres and square inches.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Cuboids and Cubes
11 questionsA cuboid has six rectangular faces in three equal pairs; its surface is the sum of their areas, its volume is length times breadth times height.
Cylinders and Cones
15 questionsA cylinder is a circle carried straight up through a height; a cone on the same base and height holds exactly one third of it.
Spheres and Hemispheres
9 questionsA sphere's surface is four times the area of its great circle and its volume is four thirds of π times the radius cubed; a hemisphere is exactly half the solid.
Combined Solids and the Frustum
11 questionsA joined solid's volume is the sum of its parts and its surface is only what shows outside; a frustum is the piece of a cone left when its top is cut off parallel to the base.
Melting, Recasting and Water Level
6 questionsWhen a solid is melted and remade, or dropped into water, its volume stays the same: equate the old volume to the new one and solve.

| Right triangle turned about a side that makes the right angle | Right circular cone |
| Right triangle turned about its hypotenuse | Two cones joined base to base |
| Semicircle turned about its diameter | Sphere |
| Cone cut by a plane parallel to its base | A circle The solid piece left below the cut is a frustum; the cut face itself is a circle. |
