Sequence and Series: SPI Mathematics
Sequence and Series has 39 questions in the SPI bank, and three of them are from the 2022 paper. Twenty-five are EASY, twelve MODERATE and only two HARD. Thirty-six are about arithmetic progressions and rest on just two formulas, one for a term and one for a sum, so the marks are lost to small slips: n in place of n minus 1, a sum given when a term is asked, a sign dropped. The other three go one step further, to geometric progressions and the two means.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
The nth Term of an AP
17 questionsIn an arithmetic progression each term is the one before it plus a fixed common difference d, so the nth term is a + (n − 1)d.
Three Terms in an AP
5 questionsIf a, b, c are in AP, the middle term is the average of the other two (2b = a + c), and three unknown terms are best written as a − d, a, a + d.
Sum of n Terms of an AP
14 questionsThe sum of n terms of an AP is n/2 times the first term plus the last term, or n/2 times (2a + (n − 1)d) when the last term is not known.
Geometric Progressions and Means
3 questionsA geometric progression multiplies by a fixed common ratio r at every step; the arithmetic mean of two numbers is half their sum and the geometric mean is the square root of their product.
