Mean of Grouped Data
For a frequency table, each class is stood in for by its class mark, and the mean is the sum of frequency times class mark divided by the total frequency.
Why this matters
Ten questions in the bank, seven of them EASY. Most hand you the totals and ask for the mean or a missing number in one line, by the direct, assumed mean or step deviation formula. One HARD question asks for two missing frequencies from the mean and the total.
Concept 1 of 3: Class marks and the direct method
Definition
- Class mark , the mid-point of the class.
- Class size (width) upper limit lower limit. It is not the class mark.
- Mean , with the class marks.
- Divide by the total frequency , never by the number of classes.
- Two missing frequencies need two equations: one from the total frequency, one from .
Direct method
- frequency of a class
- class mark of that class

| Class Interval | 0-6 | 6-12 | 12-18 | 18-24 | 24-30 |

| Frequency | 7 | 5 | 10 | 12 | 6 |
Multiplying by a class limit
Dividing by the number of classes
Using only one equation for two unknown frequencies
Concept 2 of 3: Assumed mean method
Definition
- Choose an assumed mean a, usually a class mark near the middle.
- Deviation , measured from the class mark of each class.
- Mean .
- Classes below a have negative deviations; keep the signs.
Assumed mean method
- aassumed mean
- deviation of a class mark from a

Concept 3 of 3: Step deviation method
Definition
- , where h is the class size.
- Mean .
- If is given, read off a = 40 and h = 5.
Step deviation method
- hclass size, the same for every class
