Surds, Indices and Simplification: SPI Mathematics
Surds, Indices and Simplification has 28 questions in the SPI bank, and three of them are from the 2022 paper. Over half are MODERATE (15 MODERATE, 12 EASY and one HARD), yet nearly all come down to a few laws of powers used with care. The marks are usually lost in three places: a negative index read as a negative number, a fractional index turned the wrong way up, and a root left in a denominator.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Laws of Indices
9 questionsPowers of the same base multiply by adding their indices, divide by subtracting them, and a power of a power multiplies them.
Fractional Indices and Exponential Equations
11 questionsA fractional index is a root followed by a power, and an equation in powers is solved by writing both sides as powers of one base and matching the indices.
Surds and Rationalising
8 questionsA surd is a root that cannot be simplified to a rational number; you simplify it, compare it, and clear it from a denominator with its conjugate.
