Energy Sources: SPI Physics

Energy Sources has 8 questions in the SPI bank, three from Practice Paper 1 and five from the LWS mocks, and none from the 2022 paper. Seven are EASY and one is MODERATE, and not one needs a calculation: each asks for a single fact about a source. The wrong options are built from half-truths, such as nuclear power counted as clean because it gives no smoke, so these pages give each source its drawback alongside its energy chain.

The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.

Power Plants and Clean Energy

Reference tables (3)

The chain of energy changes in each power plant5 rows
Plant or deviceEnergy at the startChain of changes
Thermal power plantChemical energy of coalchemical → heat → kinetic (turbine) → electrical
Nuclear power plantNuclear energy of uraniumnuclear → heat → kinetic (turbine) → electrical
Hydroelectric plantPotential energy of stored waterpotential → kinetic → electrical
Wind mill generatorKinetic energy of windkinetic → electrical
Solar cellLight energy of the Sunlight → electrical
Electrical energy is always the LAST link, never the first.
Clean and polluting sources, and the drawback of each7 rows
SourceClean while making energy?Main drawback
SolarYes, the least pollutingWeak at night and on cloudy days
WindYesNeeds steady strong winds and a lot of land
TidalYesFew coastal sites are suitable
Hydroelectric (dam)Yes, no fuel is burntFloods land and harms the plants and animals of the region
GeothermalMostlyCan release gases such as hydrogen sulphide
NuclearNoRadioactive waste and the risk of radiation leaks
Thermal (coal)NoSmoke, carbon dioxide and other gases
No smoke is not the same as clean: nuclear power gives no smoke and is still not clean.
Solar cells and what they are made of5 rows
QuestionAnswer
Energy change in a solar cellLight energy into electrical energy
Kind of materialSemiconductor
Elements usedSilicon (most common), selenium (earliest cells)
Many cells joined togetherA solar panel
Common usesSatellites, road signs, calculators

Biomass and Biogas

Reference tables (2)

What counts as biomass, and how biogas forms7 rows
FuelBiomass?Why
WoodYesComes from trees
Cow dung cakesYesAnimal waste
Crop wasteYesPlant material
Gobar gas (biogas)YesMade by bacteria from dung and plant waste
CoalNoA fossil fuel, buried for millions of years
PetroleumNoA fossil fuel
Uranium (nuclear fuel)NoNot from living matter at all
The biogas plant: what goes in and what comes out7 rows
Part of the processWhat it is
Goes inSlurry of dung (or plant waste) and water
ConditionsWater present, air kept out
Closed tankThe digester
Main gas madeMethane
Other gasesCarbon dioxide, hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide
Left behindSlurry used as manure, rich in nitrogen and phosphorus
Uses of the gasCooking and lighting
The two things a biogas plant needs: water in the slurry, and no air.
