Simple and Compound Interest: SSC CGL Quantitative Aptitude
Simple and Compound Interest has 132 questions in the SSC CGL Tier I bank, and 57 of them come from the 2025 shifts. Ninety are EASY, forty-two MODERATE and none HARD, so the marks go to speed: Tier I gives you about 36 seconds a question. Simple interest carries most of the chapter, while compound interest arrived late: 27 of its 28 questions are from the 2025 shifts. Two facts do nearly all the work. Under simple interest, rate times years is the interest as a percent of the sum; under compound interest, the sum is multiplied by the same factor every year. The fast routes on these pages are those facts with the arithmetic cut short, and each one says when it is safe to use.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Simple Interest
15 PYQsSimple interest is paid on the original sum only, so every year earns the same interest: the rate percent of the principal.
Finding the Rate, Time or Principal
28 PYQsThe simple interest formula links four numbers, so any three of them give the fourth: the rate, the time or the principal.
Interest as a Fraction of the Sum
21 PYQsThe interest as a percent of the principal is the rate times the years, so a question that never names the sum can still be solved.
Sums Lent at Two Rates
23 PYQsWhen money is spread over two or more rates, add the interest from each part; a split of one total is fastest by putting it all at the lower rate first.
Rate Changes and Part Repayments
16 PYQsWhen the rate, the time or the principal changes partway, work out the interest stretch by stretch on what is owed in each stretch, and add.
Compound Interest
18 PYQsUnder compound interest each year's interest joins the principal, so the amount is multiplied by the same growth factor every year.
Doubling, Part Years and Instalments
11 PYQsCompound growth repeats a factor every period: a sum that doubles keeps doubling, a part year or a shorter period uses its share of the rate, and equal instalments are matched to the loan by present worth.

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (5)
- Using the simple interest rule under compound interest→ A sum that becomes n times itself at compound interest
- Compounding the part year at the full rate→ Part years and compounding more often than yearly
