Percentage, Profit and Loss: SSC CGL Quantitative Aptitude
Percentage, Profit and Loss has 326 questions in the SSC CGL Tier I bank, more than any other Quantitative Aptitude chapter, and they come in roughly equal thirds from 2023, 2024 and 2025. None is HARD: 202 are EASY and 124 MODERATE, so marks here are lost to slow arithmetic and to a percentage taken of the wrong base, not to hard ideas. With about 36 seconds a question, the habit that pays is to turn every percentage into a multiplying factor or a simple fraction and chain the factors. Cost price, marked price, discounts, elections and dishonest weights all reduce to that one line, and the later pages lean on the factor idea built in the first two.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Percentage Basics
31 PYQsA percentage is a fraction with 100 at the bottom: x% of a number is x hundredths of it, and every percentage is measured against a base.
Successive Percentage Change
28 PYQsEach percentage change multiplies the current value by a factor, so several changes in a row multiply together instead of adding.
Percentage Word Problems
43 PYQsElections, exam marks, savings and mixed groups: long stories that reduce to a chain of percentages or a weighted average.
Profit and Loss
61 PYQsProfit or loss is the gap between the selling price and the cost price, and its percentage is always taken on the cost price unless the question says otherwise.
Marked Price and Discount
81 PYQsA discount is taken off the marked price; a trader marks above cost and discounts below the mark, and the profit is what survives both steps.
Successive Discounts and Offers
54 PYQsTwo or more discounts one after another, and offers such as 'buy 5, get 2 free', each turned into a single equal discount so they can be priced and compared.
Faulty Weights and Article Counts
28 PYQsA seller who hands over less than he charges for gains on quantity as well as on price; both effects multiply, and 'cost of x articles equals selling price of y' is the same idea counted in pieces.
