Ratio, Proportion and Variation: SSC CGL Quantitative Aptitude
Ratio, Proportion and Variation has 212 questions in the SSC CGL Tier I bank, and 105 of them come from the 2025 shifts. Of the 212, 148 are EASY, 63 MODERATE and one HARD, so the marks here go to speed: Tier I gives you about 36 seconds a question. The weight has moved across the three years. Only one of the 27 questions on the fourth, third and mean proportionals is from the 2025 shifts, while 39 of the 42 partnership questions are. Almost every row turns on one habit: write each quantity as its ratio term times one unknown unit, find that unit once, and read off what is asked.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Ratio Basics
34 PYQsA ratio a : b says the two quantities are a parts and b parts of one common unit, so every ratio question comes down to finding that unit once.
Fourth, Third and Mean Proportionals
27 PYQsFour numbers are in proportion when the first is to the second as the third is to the fourth, and every proportional question is solved by one rule: the product of the outer terms equals the product of the inner terms.
Direct and Inverse Variation
13 PYQsTwo quantities vary directly when their ratio stays fixed and inversely when their product stays fixed, so one known pair of values gives the constant and the constant gives every other value.
Combining and Changing Ratios
19 PYQsTwo ratios that share a term join into one once that term is made equal in both, and a ratio that changes after items are added or removed gives one equation for the ratio unit.
Ratios in Income, Savings and Ages
14 PYQsIncome is expenditure plus savings for every person, and the gap between two ages never changes, so each of these stories gives one fixed link that turns the ratios into numbers.
Partnership
42 PYQsPartners share a profit in the ratio of capital multiplied by the time it stays in the business, after taking out first any amount the agreement sets aside.
Mixture Quantities and Replacement
33 PYQsA mixture question is bookkeeping: write how much of each ingredient the vessel holds, change only what the stem changes, and form the new ratio or percentage at the end.
Mixtures and Alligation
30 PYQsThe price of a mixture is the weighted average of the prices that go into it, and alligation runs that average backwards to give the ratio in which two kinds were mixed.
