Surds, Indices and Simplification: SSC CGL Quantitative Aptitude
Surds, Indices and Simplification has 157 questions in the SSC CGL Tier I bank, and 77 of them come from the 2025 shifts. There are 126 EASY, 31 MODERATE and no HARD questions, so the marks here are lost to slips and slow working, not to hard ideas: Tier I gives you about 36 seconds a question. The 2023 and 2024 shifts set long bracket chains; the 2025 shifts set none of those and asked for a pattern spotted at a glance instead. So every page gives the full method and then the fast route, with the point where the fast route stops being safe. Read them in order: each page uses only what the pages before it teach.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
BODMAS and Brackets
44 PYQsA long expression has one right value only when everyone works it in the same order: the bar, brackets from the inside out, 'of', then division and multiplication, then addition and subtraction.
Fractions and Decimals
44 PYQsFractions and decimals follow the same BODMAS order as whole numbers; what changes is the arithmetic: mixed numbers, reciprocals, decimal places, and knowing which form makes a step easy.
Missing Numbers and Letters
9 PYQsWhen a letter or a blank sits inside a BODMAS chain, simplify everything around it first, then undo what is left; when the whole expression is in letters, open the brackets and collect like terms, or substitute with care over signs.
Indices and Square Roots
12 PYQsThe laws of indices count repeated factors; the square root of a perfect square is found from its last digit and the nearest square of a round number; a root inside a root is opened from the inside.
Simplification Shortcuts
18 PYQsMany long-looking expressions are an identity or a fixed ratio in disguise; seeing the pattern replaces the arithmetic, and a digit-sum or last-digit check confirms the option in seconds.
Surds and Rationalisation
20 PYQsA surd is a root that is not a whole number, such as √2; surds are simplified by taking out square factors, combined only when the roots match, cleared from a denominator with the conjugate, and compared by squaring.
Square Roots of Surds and Surd Equations
10 PYQsA number of the form a + 2√b is the square of √m + √n when m + n = a and mn = b; an equation with two roots is solved through their sum and difference, or by componendo and dividendo.
