Time, Speed and Distance: SSC CGL Quantitative Aptitude
Time, Speed and Distance has 155 questions in the SSC CGL Tier I bank, and 32 of them come from the 2025 shifts. Of the 155, 98 are EASY, 52 MODERATE and only 5 HARD, so the marks go to speed: Tier I gives you about 36 seconds a question. The whole chapter is one line, distance equals speed times time, used after one decision: which speed counts, the mover's own, the difference of two speeds or their sum. Most marks are lost to unit slips between km/h, m/s and minutes rather than to the method, so the 5/18 rule is worth knowing cold. The 2025 shifts asked mostly the plain forms; not one boat or train question comes from them.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Speed, Time and Distance Basics
17 PYQsDistance equals speed times time, as long as all three use matching units, and when one of the three is held fixed the other two move in a simple proportion.
Average Speed
17 PYQsAverage speed is the whole distance divided by the whole time, which is not the plain average of the speeds unless each speed was kept for the same time.
Speed Changes and Equations
14 PYQsOn a fixed route, speed and time change in opposite directions by the same ratio, and two speeds over the same route differ in time by a gap that fixes the distance.
Relative Speed: Chasing and Meeting
42 PYQsTwo movers on one road close or open the gap between them at the difference of their speeds when they go the same way, and at the sum of their speeds when they come towards each other.
Trains and Relative Speed
8 PYQsA train has length, so to pass anything it must cover its own length plus the length of what it passes, at the relative speed of the two.
Boats and Streams
23 PYQsThe stream adds its speed to a boat going down and takes it away from a boat going up, so the boat's own speed is half the sum of the two and the stream's is half the difference.
Races
7 PYQsIn a race, beating someone by so many metres tells you where the loser is when the winner finishes, beating by so many seconds tells you how much longer the loser needs, and a head start shortens one runner's distance or time.
Circular Tracks
27 PYQsOn a circular track two runners meet whenever the faster has gained a whole lap (same direction) or the two together have covered a whole lap (opposite directions), and they are back at the start together after the LCM of their lap times.
