Figure Counting: SSC CGL Reasoning
Figure Counting has 36 questions in the SSC CGL Tier I bank, every one from the 2024 shifts: 5 EASY, 20 MODERATE and 11 HARD. Each shows one drawing and asks how many triangles, squares, rectangles or circles it holds, and the four options usually sit one apart. So the marks go to a counting order that cannot skip a shape or count one twice: label the points, count by size, use the formula for any regular grid or fan of lines, and check the lines where two parts of the drawing meet.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Counting Triangles
25 PYQsCount every triangle in a drawn figure, small and large, by labelling the points and listing the triangles in order, or by splitting a big figure into blocks.
Counting Squares and Other Figures
11 PYQsCount the squares in a grid or a set of overlapping squares, the rectangles in a divided rectangle, and the circles or semicircles in a drawing.

Watch out for (4)
- Counting only the smallest triangles→ Labelling points and listing triangles
- Counting three points that lie on one line→ Labelling points and listing triangles
- Adding the blocks and stopping→ Counting a large figure block by block
- Counting a shared triangle in both blocks→ Counting a large figure block by block
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (4)
- Counting only the single cells→ Squares in grids and overlapping squares
- Using the n by n rule on a grid that is not square→ Squares in grids and overlapping squares
- Forgetting that a square is a rectangle→ Rectangles, circles and semicircles
- Closing an open figure in your head→ Rectangles, circles and semicircles
