Paper Folding and Cutting: SSC CGL Reasoning
Paper Folding and Cutting has 56 questions in the SSC CGL Tier I bank: 20 from the 2023 shifts and 36 from the 2024 shifts, and 53 of them MODERATE. In 44 the square sheet is folded in half twice and cut, and the rest use diagonal folds, folds into thirds, a single fold or a folded transparent sheet. One idea solves all of them: every fold is a mirror line. Undo the folds one at a time, the last first, and put a reflection of each cut across each fold line, checking both where it lands and which way it faces.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Unfolding a Quarter
44 PYQsA square sheet is folded in half twice, down to one quarter, and cut or punched; opening it mirrors every cut across each fold line in turn, giving a copy in each quarter.
Other Folds and Transparent Sheets
12 PYQsSheets folded along a diagonal, into thirds or only once before they are cut, and transparent sheets folded so that the pattern on one half lands on the other.

Watch out for (6)
- Counting four copies of a cut on a fold→ Where the copies land
- Placing the copies at the corners when the cut was near the centre→ Where the copies land
- Undoing the folds in the wrong order→ Where the copies land
- Sliding a copy instead of reflecting it→ Which way each copy faces
- Turning the copy upside down across a vertical fold→ Which way each copy faces
- Ignoring the diagonally opposite quarter→ Which way each copy faces
Watch out for (6)
- Using the centre lines for a diagonal fold→ Diagonal folds, thirds and single folds
- Counting layers that the punch did not go through→ Diagonal folds, thirds and single folds
- Putting the outer copies in the same position as the middle one→ Diagonal folds, thirds and single folds
- Sliding the folded part instead of reflecting it→ Folding a transparent sheet
- Moving the half that stays still→ Folding a transparent sheet
- Measuring the distance from the edge, not the fold→ Folding a transparent sheet
