Average: AFCAT Numerical Ability
Average is the largest chapter of AFCAT Numerical Ability here, with 653 questions, and thirteen of them come from AFCAT papers of 2015 to 2019. Those past-year questions are short: a man replaced in a group, a weight misread, a cricketer's last four matches, a family's ages, a year of household spending. Nearly all of them, and most of the practice questions, come down to one move: turn an average into a total, change the total, and divide by the new count. The pages teach that move first and then the stories it is used in. The HARD questions gather towards the end, where groups leave and join at once or a percentage decides who counts.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
The Average, Its Total and the First n Numbers
80 questionsAn average is a total shared out equally: find it, run it backwards to a total or a missing value, see how it moves when every value changes, and use the shortcuts for evenly spaced numbers.
Consecutive Numbers: the Middle Term Does the Work
84 questionsConsecutive integers, even numbers, odd numbers and multiples are evenly spaced, so their average is the middle term and every other term is a fixed number of steps away from it.
One Value In, Out or Changed
93 questionsTurn the old average into a total, add or take away the value that changed, and divide by the right count: for a newcomer, someone who leaves, a member who is replaced and a value that was misread.
Groups: Combine Totals, Split Totals, Watch the Overlap
62 questionsTurn every group's average into a total. Totals add to give a combined average, subtract to give the average of the rest, and a value two groups share is counted twice.
Groups That Join or Leave
94 questionsWhen a whole group with its own average joins or leaves, add or take away its total and change the count by its size. When some leave and others join, do both before you divide.
Weighted Averages, Rates and Percentages
87 questionsWhen values count unequally, multiply each by its weight, add, and divide by the total weight: for marks with weightage, percentage shares of a group, average speed, and members a percentage above or below the average.
The Highest, the Lowest, and What Is Left
48 questionsWhen the largest or smallest values are taken out, the old total minus the new total is their sum; given their difference as well, you can find each one.
Batting Averages, Runs Needed and Run Rates
53 questionsA batting average is runs divided by innings (or by dismissals), a run rate is runs divided by overs, and every cricket question is a total of runs read against a count.
Ages Over Time, and a New Baby
52 questionsEvery member of a family gets a year older each year, so the family's total age grows by its size every year; a baby adds a member but little or nothing to the total.

The first n natural, odd and even numbers5 rows
| The first n ... | Sum | Average |
|---|---|---|

Watch out for (9)
- An average of averages→ Average, total and count
- Zero is a value→ Average, total and count
- Count the test still to come→ A missing value, or the score needed for a target
- Order matters→ When every value changes
- Some values, not all→ When every value changes
- Check the spacing first→ Evenly spaced numbers: first plus last, halved
- Find the right first term→ Evenly spaced numbers: first plus last, halved
- Even numbers average n + 1, not n→ The first n natural, odd and even numbers
- Squares are not evenly spaced→ The first n natural, odd and even numbers
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (4)
- Use the right step→ An odd count: the average is the middle number
- Check the parity→ An even count: halfway between the two middle numbers
- The spread does not depend on the average→ Pairs from the two ends
- Centre the run, do not start it→ Letters, products, and a run that changes
Formulas (5)
Watch out for (5)
- The count goes up too→ One more value: a new day, a teacher, a manager
- A low value leaving raises the average→ One value removed
- The newcomer pays for everyone→ Finding the value that joined or left
- No one was added→ Replacing a member
- Which way round→ A value misread or miscopied
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (4)
- Not the plain mean of the averages→ Combining groups
- Check that the groups cover everyone once→ The rest of the group
- The overlap may be more than one number→ Overlapping groups: the shared value counted twice
- Halve the sum→ Pair averages: add all three
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (4)
- The size of the joining group matters→ A group joins
- Leaving can raise the average→ A group leaves
- Two changes to the count→ Some leave, others join
- Divide by the group, not by everyone→ Finding the group that joined or left
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (4)
- Divide by the weights, not the count→ Weights given as numbers or ratios
- Speeds do not average directly→ Averages of rates: speed, pass rate, return
- Turn the percentage into people→ Percentage shares as weights, and the missing share
- Which average?→ Values a percentage above or below the average
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Count what is left→ Removing the highest and the lowest
- Check that it really is the extreme→ One extreme alone: the largest or the smallest
- Halve at the end→ Highest and lowest from their sum and difference
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Not-outs change the divisor→ Batting average and the next innings
- Count the innings still to come→ Runs needed for a target, and how many innings
- Do not average two rates→ Run rate, required rate and economy
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (5)
- The gap stays, the ratio does not→ Moving a family through time
- Age the family first→ A child or a baby joins the family
- Age the older members first→ Finding the baby's age
- A just-born baby is 0→ Finding the baby's age
- Children age from their own birth→ Births at different times
