Decimal and Fractions: AFCAT Numerical Ability
Decimal and Fractions holds 239 questions, and 13 of them come from AFCAT papers of 2016 to 2019. Seven of those thirteen are on squares and roots, and most of the rest are fraction word problems and long expressions to simplify. The practice questions are mostly one-step drills on decimals, so the chapter starts from what a decimal is and how it relates to a fraction, builds up through ordering and arithmetic, and ends with the roots and percentages that lean on all of it.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Place Value, and Moving Between Fractions and Decimals
37 questionsEach place after the point is a tenth of the one before it, so every terminating decimal is a fraction over 10, 100 or 1000, and every such fraction is a decimal.
Terminating and Recurring Decimals, and Turning Them into Fractions
29 questionsA fraction stops as a decimal only when its denominator is built from 2s and 5s. Otherwise a block of digits repeats, and that block can be turned back into a fraction with 9s and 0s.
Comparing and Ordering Decimals and Fractions
43 questionsGive every decimal the same number of places, then compare them as whole numbers. For fractions, turn them into decimals or cross-multiply.
Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying and Dividing Decimals
38 questionsLine up the points to add and subtract, count decimal places to multiply, and move the point in both numbers to divide.
Fraction Arithmetic, Fraction Word Problems and Simplification
33 questionsWork with fractions and mixed numbers, find a whole from a fraction of it, and simplify long expressions in the right order or with an algebraic shortcut.
Squares, Cubes and Their Roots, Including Decimals and Nested Roots
17 questionsKnow the squares and cubes by heart, find the nearest perfect square, take roots of decimals by halving or thirding the places, and open nested roots from the inside.
Decimals and Percentages: Converting, Percent Of, and Percentage Change
42 questionsA percentage is a number of hundredths, so moving between decimals and percentages is a shift of two places, and every percentage question is a multiplication or a division by 100.

|---|---|---|
| 1st: tenths | the 2 is worth | |

Watch out for (7)
- A zero holds a place→ Place value after the decimal point
- Places are counted from the point→ Place value after the decimal point
- Count places, not digits→ Reading and writing decimals in words
- The digits of the fraction are not the decimal→ Writing a fraction as a decimal
- Eighths need three places→ Writing a fraction as a decimal
- Lowest terms means no common factor left→ Writing a decimal as a fraction in lowest terms
- One zero in the denominator per place→ Writing a decimal as a fraction in lowest terms
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (6)
- Reduce before you test→ Terminating or recurring: the denominator test
- A rounded decimal is a different number→ Terminating or recurring: the denominator test
- Nines, not a power of ten→ Pure recurring decimals as fractions
- The whole part is added, not written on top→ Pure recurring decimals as fractions
- Subtract the part that does not repeat→ Mixed recurring decimals as fractions
- One 0 for each digit that does not repeat→ Mixed recurring decimals as fractions
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (7)
- More digits is not bigger→ Comparing two decimals
- Trailing zeros change nothing→ Comparing two decimals
- Read which order is asked→ Ordering a list, and picking the largest or smallest

- Check against both ends→ A decimal between two decimals
- A bigger denominator is smaller only when the numerators match→ Comparing and ordering fractions
- Cross-multiply the right pairs→ Comparing and ordering fractions
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (6)
- Line up the points, not the last digits→ Adding and subtracting decimals
- A whole number still has places→ Adding and subtracting decimals
- Place the point before dropping zeros→ Multiplying decimals
- Multiplying by a decimal below 1 makes it smaller→ Multiplying decimals
- Move the point in both numbers→ Dividing decimals
- Count the zeros in a small answer→ Dividing decimals

- Divide by the difference, not by either fraction→ Finding the whole from a fraction of it
- Remains means the new level→ Finding the whole from a fraction of it
- Dividing by a fraction flips it→ The wrong-operation problem
- Answer what is asked→ The wrong-operation problem
- Division and multiplication go left to right→ Order of operations (BODMAS)

Formulas (4)
Watch out for (6)
- Two places, not one→ Decimals to percentages and back
- Going back divides→ Decimals to percentages and back

- The whole goes underneath→ What percentage one number is of another
- Divide by the original, not the new value→ Percentage increase and decrease
- Up and down by the same percentage does not cancel→ Percentage increase and decrease
